The last stanza mentions a soldier dying. However, he can hear the sounds of triumph. Readers can interpret this as his side is winning. But at what expense?

The poet uses an image of war. The purple Host is the royal army, as purple is often seen as the color of royalty. The images relate to one another, as they show and emphasize persistence, not giving up, and succeeding. The motif is the feeling of victory, after not giving up.

The theme of the poem is the feeling of victory after not giving up. The first stanza talks about who sweet success is, how success can only be deserved by those who put in the effort to try to win. The second stanza refers to how the opponent had surrendered to the winning team, and therefore did not know what victory felt like. The third stanza talks about how clear the feeling of victory was.
