In the beginning, it talks about the build-up of the problems between the East and the West. It talks about how the people crossing into the west made the wall get built. Then near the middle of the book, it talked about how the wall got built. Then it talks about how many people died trying to cross the wall which was 171 people. In the end, it talked about the end of the wall. He is responding to the conflict by jumping over the wall to get to the other side. Jumping over the wall is basically him trying to escape his side of the wall. So he is responding to the conflict by kind of going away from the conflict instead of trying to help.
