Band assembling

The first initial task was to get ourselves into groups and decide on which songs we wanted to make a version of. Groups could consist of however members an MD needed, with some MD's choosing to do an audition for members to see who works best for what they want to do with their piece. For my band I chose to have a conventional Rock/Metal set up. This included two guitars, vocals, bass guitar and drums.

Choosing a song

As well as choosing a band, the first task also included choosing a song to make a version of. For example, I chose to take 'Set Fire to the Rain' and turn it into a Metalcore piece. The aim of the task was essentially to take a song and make it completely different to the original. There were dangers with this task like choosing one of your favourite songs and completely changing it to the point where you start disliking the song, and for that reason I took a song that I don't think very much of and made it into something that has features of one of my favourite sub-genres of Metal.

Rehearsals

This is the part of the project where we, as musicians, come into our own. This is the stage where we work on structuring the song, choosing the genre, instrumentation, timing and individual rehearsal. So for structure that involves structuring the song differently to be successful in creating a version of an original. For genre that involves changing the style almost completely whilst instrumentation doesn't have to be too different from the original piece. What is meant by timing is almost like working towards a deadline. A week by week timetable is one of the more efficient ways of working; i.e working on the verse one week and working on the chorus the following week. Individual rehearsal is essentially just practising at home to get the song up to the highest possible standard for the gig.

This is essentially the work going on behind the scenes in a way. We arranged ourselves into different teams that were to work on specific things leading up to the gig. The teams are Tech, Marketing and Artistic Direction. A big part of organising a gig is marketing and promotion; this will fall under one of the marketing teams responsibilities. The Tech Team have the responsibility of setting up the stage and making sure everything is in place as well as looking as professional as possible. The Tech Team also have to monitor the amps, instruments and lighting to put on the best possible performance. The Artistic Direction team have to devise a setlist and think of a theme for the concert.

The main task for the Tech team is to make sure everything is operational during the gig and that all of the MD's have the equipment that they need for their performance. As member of this team my role is to make sure that the guitars are in a good condition, tuned and performance ready. As well as this, it was my responsibility to devise a Tech Spec list for all MD's to fill out. We also have to take care of amplification and lighting, both requiring support from members of the Music Tech class.

The Marketing Team's task was to promote the concert through the use of posters and social media. They also had to think of a charity to promote the event for, with the chosen charity being support for people involved in the tragedy at Grenfell Tower. The means of raising money is by selling tickets at a general rate (still TBC) and by setting up time slots for busking to draw interest into the performance.

This is the final stage of the project where we get to showcase our work to friends and family. However, things that need to be catered for stem from refreshments all the way through to security. there needs to be a sufficient supply of refreshments to ensure that the audience remain happy throughout the entirety of the performance. We also need to make sure that there is good enough security to maintain safety as well as order within the audience. We also need to consider whether we are going to be recording the performance and whether or not we will have a photographer. Personally, I think we should consider having a photographer and recording the performance as it is a good way of documenting our success and are also a good way to show how we went from having almost nothing to putting on what hopes to be a really good show.
