Sad Perfect is about a 16-year-old girl, Pea, with an uncommon eating disorder called Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake (ARFID). Pea, short for a name that isn't stated, has pretty much always had a problem eating. It's not like she thinks she too fat or shouldn't eat, ARFID is more of a textural problem. For example, she described biting into an apple as 'sinking her teeth into human skin'. Most foods simply gross her out. Pea also refers often to her "monster", which represents her hunger when she hasn't eaten much. The monster appears when she is in stressful situations as well. She does have a variety of "safe foods" that include many small and easy foods such as carrots and crackers. Pea lives with her mom, dad, and older brother, Todd. She doesn't have friends except her best friend, Jae. She struggles slightly in school, mainly because she is not a very social person. Along comes Ben, this boy she met at Jae's birthday party. Ben and Pea begin to really like each other, and end up together. She confides in him about her ARFID, and he is happy to help her. This story is based around Pea having to deal and treat her disorder, with the help of her family, Jae, Ben, and her therapist, Shayna.

Pea- 16 years old, main character. Pea has been struggling with ARFID for pretty much her whole life. Her and her family did not know what was going on until they found out what ARFID was. She meets a boy, Ben, at Jae's birthday party and they end up falling for each other. Pea struggles with her ARFID, as well as some family issues and anxiety. She begins to see a therapist and goes to therapy often, which helps her immensely. Her and her older brother have an odd relationship- they don't talk or hang out together. In fact, he would make fun of her for having problems eating. But, he secretly deep down cares much for her, as seen on a few pages, but I won't spoil it!

Ben- Pea's second boyfriend. He goes to a different school but that doesn't stop them from hanging out all the time. Ben falls for Pea just as she falls for him, and they spend a lot of time together. He cares a lot about her and her illness and tries his best to help her and make her feel better no matter what. When Pea is admitted to a mental institution, he even sends her a letter and tells her that he loves her and stuff like that. He is very good to both her and her family, and Pea's family thinks that he is very nice, but at some points in the book they feel doubtful that his company is positively effective for their daughter.

Mom & Dad- Pea's parents. Her mother tends to drink a lot, but she never is portrayed as drunk or abusive. Her father is always watching sports, talking about sports, etc. She isn't very close with either of her parents, but she talks to her mom much more than her dad. Her mom wants the family to be more interactive, spend more time together, not fight as much. Her dad doesn't seem to care, and her brother has his headphones in too often really to hear it. Both parents are genuinely concerned about her disorder, but her mom shows more interest in helping and understanding what foods she can and can't have. By the end of the book, the family has grown closer together after therapy and talking out what they want done.

Setting

The setting of this book alternates between probably 3 main places, then other less important areas. The 3 main ones are Pea's house, Pea's school, and then the mental institution she was admitted to at some point in the story.
Pea's house- the setting here is usually more stressful for Pea. She seems to always be bothered that her dad just watches sports all day, her brother listens to too much music, and her mom either drinking or trying to talk to her.

Pea's school- although there are less scenes in this setting, Pea's school really brings out her anxiety. Her ex-boyfriend goes there, she has trouble learning because of her disorder at times, and she doesn't like doing the work. During the school scenes, Pea's thoughts and emotions seem powerful, especially during her English class when she is told to write a 6-word-summary about her life.

Mental Institution- this piece of setting is definitely the part when Pea has hit her rock bottom. Once she is reported for self-harming, her parents decide that she will be admitted to this mental institution for at least 4 days. Pea is very against this. She will have no contact with anyone outside of the hospital, so no Ben, Jae, parents, etc. She is super angry with her parents. She meets some good people there, but after a melt down she is put into isolation where she screams until her voice is gone and she pukes everywhere. Even after all that, she isn't checked upon and the barf is cleaned up. She wakes up to her parents frantically searching for her, finding her, and immediately bringing her home.

My Review

This book was a good read for me. For one, I learned something new, ARFID! I really enjoyed the characters and the relationship between Ben and Pea. I would recommend this book for anyone around my age, because it definitely can open your mind up to see how someone with an eating disorder lives and how their daily lives are. I chose this book because I saw that it was about a topic that I don't normally read into, and I've never read a book about an eating disorder so I thought it would be something different maybe.
