In this piece, Haring shows three figures who all have X’s marked on their bodys to signify AIDS. The figures are covering their eyes, ears, and mouth. In a world where people were shamed for having AIDS, Haring wanted to depict people in an uncomfortable situation who were too afraid to stand up and say something. The piece forces the viewer to realize the silent struggles diagnosed people have. These actions also depict the title of the work, Ignorance = Fear, Silence = Death.

Perhaps the most crucial part in displaying the message of the painting are the words in it: “Ignorance = Fear” and “Silence = Death”. These words both help to illuminate the overarching theme of the painting, which is that AIDS needs to be taken more seriously around the world. The words “Ignorance = Fear” represents how the lack of knowledge around AIDS is leading to fear of those who have it. Then, the words “Silence = Death” represent that the lack of recognition of AIDS as a serious issue is causing widespread death among the gay community and those who have AIDS.
