We learn that she lives in New York and works as a nurse, which is a big deal because of the influenza pandemic. Flossie, Violet's best friend, died 2 years ago, of influenza and Violet saw blood coming out of her nose and ears. We learn of Violet's older brother, Stephen, but we are curious to learn more. Chloe is in Ney York as a new woman she voted, for and chooses not to be married. At the beginning of the chapter, violet has $3.92 and runs away from home. she is headed to New York, the Henry street settlement houses, to find Chloe. We learned that a hope chest is not just the name of Chloe who gave her car. Violet is nervous about getting onto a train because she is only 11 years old and traveling alone. After buying a train ticket and sitting down on the train, she meets Mrs. Renwick Violets to try to be polite and Mrs. Renwick tells her that women should not be doctors or reporters but get married and have babies.

All of these ladies are suffragists but Mrs. Dexter is not in favor of helping Myrtle because she is ''colored'' and argues with the other women about it. She also realizes that the women who pinned a red rose on her at the train station was an anti, and she was staying in an anti room at the hotel. She finds out she can eat sandwiches is she goes to the antis meeting. as she listens to them speak, she learns how they are getting men to change there minds about voting on the Susan B. Anthony amendment. Violet overheard some people talking and they said, May-hew and she got really excited to finally see Chloe! Chloe and Violet finally see each other and violet tells Chloe she had run away from home to find her.
