Causes of the French Revolution

France was on the edge of bankruptcy due to their role in the Revolutionary War. They were facing many economic problems and society wanted a change. The citizens were being ruled by absolutism and wanted to rebel.

National Assembly

The National Assembly ended the privileges of the First and Second Estate and created the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen. This was based of the Declaration of Independence and sparked ideas of enlightenment.

Radical Revolution

Radicals took control over the National Assembly which ended the monarchy and made France a republic. King Louis XVI was executed and violence broke out.

The Directory

During 1795, a 5-man "Directory" was formed. This government was weak, inefficient, and brought about many riots.

Age of Napoleon

Napoleon helped overthrow the weak Directory government. He then organized a new government and put himself in charge. Citizens of France supported Napoleon throughout his rise and praised his achievements.
