1). People believe that if we just put ELL learnings in a mainstream classroom they will just blend and everything will happen naturally.
2). All ELLs learn English the same way and the same rate. There are a great deal of factors that come into play so this is not true. Need to be more conscious of academic language to be successful.
3)Good teaching is the same for native English speakers as ELLs.
4) Visual Aids will be enough to understand assignments at task. That might help them get by but they aren't really learning the academic language needed to really understand the content.

1. General classroom integration is not enough to make effective progress for ELL students in language acquisition and proper usage.
2. ELL students do not learn at the same rate as other ELL students. Teachers have to take into account backgrounds and personal factors.
3. Regular Ed and ELL students do not get to the same comprehension points through general "good teaching" methods.
4. One source of information for content is not enough for ELL students. Teachers should pull lessons, ideas, and teaching strategies from a plethora of resources to make content accessible.
5. Broad level comprehension of content does not help to carry out academic tasks effectively for ELL students. Use of organizers, role plays, and hands-on activities help to "get around" the language, but it does not help ELL students with language development in content classes.

Challenges:
- Older students who have not attended school consistently and are placed in a grade level not appropriate to their skill level.
- Helping apprehensive ELL students participate more in class although their language skills are improving.
- Academic self-esteem relating to one's past experiences.
- Overcoming Social-Emotional trauma.
- Lack of a support systems at home. Parent culture, beliefs, and differences in values do not always support school efforts.

Rewards:
- Interesting stories to tell and help expose others to different cultures and beliefs. (Cultural Diversity)
- At times, ELL students can put their real-world experiences into content for others.
- ELL students who eventually finish a task or achieve a goal makes it all worth it in the end.
- When parents are able to come in and view the work and progress of the students.
- Successful integration of family culture into the school setting.
