Greetings, I am Ralph Jovan L. Saavedra. This Padlet presentation of mine revolves around my Philippine Pop Culture interest, which is music. To be specific, the type of music I like and believe to be prevalent among Filipinos is that of folk music. The reason why I chose folk music is due to its cultural implications and how it has shaped Philippine culture itself. Furthermore, folk music has proven its importance in Philippine pop culture because of its popularity among Filipino citizens and even the international music industry, as well as its ability to distinguish Filipino culture from other Asian cultures.

Although music has been around since time immemorial, it has continued to be one of the most popular mediums of pop culture around the world. Recorded Philippine folk songs date back to the 1920s when a collection of folk songs was published by Roberto Romualdez. Within the collection are songs that aimed to promote national identity, such as the then-Philippine National Anthem. Since then, many more artists have continued to contribute and even popularize Filipino culture through music. Philippine folk artists such as Noel Cabangon and Freddie Aguilar continue to inspire fellow Filipinos by writing songs that promote cultural identity.

Pop culture in the form of music can create many changes in many ways. One major way is that it can make people happy and satisfied, encouraging them to share the joy by sharing the music. This can be further reinforced by the Uses and Gratification Theory wherein people use media to satisfy their needs. Music is very flexible, coming in with different genres to listen to depending on the mood. Hence, it provides a means by which people can relate to in order to get by in life.

In the Philippine context, music has and can continue to create change by inspiring the hearts of Filipinos to be all they can be. This has become evident throughout the years as culture itself has evolved along with folk music. Music also enables people to appreciate the different cultures found within the Philippines, with each having their own beautiful style of music. The Agenda Setting Theory plays a significant part in folk music as well because it emphasizes the importance of culture on the Filipino people, encouraging them to remember and preserve their national identity as Filipino citizens. Therefore, the ever-changing folk music always has its special place in Philippine pop culture in the past, present, and future.
