A positive classroom looks friendly to me. I see this more on the people's faces than I necessarily see on the walls. It is inviting because the people are inviting. A positive classroom feels safe. For me, this one also goes with the "sounds like". I see safety as every member in the classroom feeling valued and feeling safe to be an active, accepted member of the community. They don't need to be loud, but they should be willing to put themselves out there because they know the team will respect them and support them. It sounds like talking and collaboration and students learning how to redirect each other with positive stem sentences and polite language.

A positive classroom climate looks productive, students with smiles, making eye contact, engaged in learning, a teacher smiling, being attentive, moving around the classroom and connected to their students. Students are being safe, staying seated or moving appropriately around the room. There are procedures in place for lessons and transitions to be smooth. It sounds quiet, inviting, and respectful with appropriate tones and volume when speaking. It feels safe, welcoming and inspiring.

A positive classroom sounds joyful full of laughter and smiles. Students feel secure and loved so they are willing to take risks and ask for help when needed. Routines and procedures are strong and evident with the use of visuals, timers, or oral directions. The classroom has a feel to it that immedately makes you feel welcomed, encouraged and relaxed almost like home in the sense that your guard can be down because you are cared for as you are with no need to hide.

A warm smile and greeting from a teacher can go a long way. A student will not perform to the best of their ability if they do not feel comfortable in their classroom environment. As a preschool teacher, I am always trying to make our material fun and exciting.

An educator should take the time to get to know each of their students personally - what they like, dislike, extracurricular sports and family. I also believe that mistakes should be expected and that students should get back up and try again when they are ready, with the teacher by their side.
