Racist Ideas

"But it's important to remember that racist ideas are ideas. Anyone can produce or consume them, as this book shows."

This quote, and the next two chapters I read, really stood out to me and made me think about what it means to have a racist idea. Racist ideas come in all shapes and sizes- they can be quick statements, chapters of textbooks or entire presidencies. A lot of people I know have said to me "I'm not racist." Something I am learning about (through this book) is that you can still have racist ideas, even if you are working to be antiracist. I wish that a text like this existed when I was younger so that I (and to be honest, most of the other white kids at my school, like me) were learning about how racism is more than just one thing you say or do, but is really a system of ideas and decisions that impact lives.

I'm eager to keep reading with you- thanks for letting me take part- Mr. Pie.

"Segregationists. Assimilationists. Antiracists.
There are serious definitions to these things, but... I’m going to give you mine.
Segregationists are haters. Like, real haters. People who hate you for not being like them. Assimilationists are people who like you, but only with quotation marks. Like...“like” you. Meaning, they “like” you because you’re like them. And then there are antiracists. They love you because you’re like you."

I was reminded that racism is not just a feeling people have but a set of ideas to justify their feelings.
I was also encouraged because being able to see that the ideas started somewhere means they can end.
