Processes of connected speech: 

  • Linking: Is a way of joining the pronunciation of two words.

Could be:

Consonant vowel linking - when the first word ends with a consonant sound and the second word begins with a vowel sound. 

Vowel vowel linking - when certain vowels come next to each other an extra sound is added to make the link smooth. 

Identical consonant linking: when the end of a words is the same as the first of the next word.

Linking Vowels Within a Word: When an individual word contains two vowel sounds together, we also add a little y or w sound. 
We don’t say “die it” we say “die + yet.”

Final stop between consonants: When a stop is followed by another consonant, do not release the stop. The release creates a 
puff of air and an extra syllable. Make sure that good time doesn’t sound like “good a time” and that help me doesn’t sound like
 “help a me.”

  • Assimilation: Are sound who become more alike. 

Could be: 

Progressive assimilation: happens when the preceding sound influence the following sound since the preceding sound is dominant.

Regressive assimilation: happens when the following sound in a word influences the preceding sound.

Coalescent assimilation: the alveolar plosives /t/ and /d/ may merge with a following palatal approximant /j/ to
 become ports- alveolar affricates /tS/ and /dz/ respectively.

  • Voicing assimilation: Segment becomes like another usually adjacent segment, in voicing.

  • Gemination: when a consonant or vowel become double long.

  • Degemination: Two similar neighbouring consonants are reduced to one single consonant.

  • Elition: Deletion of segments in different positions.

Could be:

 Apharesis : deletion of the first segment.

Syncope: deletion of medial segment.

Apocope: deletion of final segment.

  • Insertion (Ephentsis) : insertion of segment into a word.

  • Consonant harmony: consonant becomes more like another.

  • Devoicing: a segment sound becomes voiceless.

  • Neutralization: consonant becomes more like another. 

  • Haplology: Elimination of a syllable when two consecutive identical or similar syllables occur.

It dependes:

  1. Syllables are both medial.
  2. The structure of the two syllables is similar. 

  • Denazalization: removing the feature ‘nasal’ from a segment leaves you with a voiced stop at the same place of articulation.

  • Metathesis: is the re-arranging of sounds or syllables in a word, or of words in a sentence.

  • Nasalization: the production of a sound while the velum is lowered, so that some air escapes through the nose during the production of the sound by the mouth.

  • Palatalization: a sound, usually before a /j/ glide but often before a high front vowel, is moved closer to the palatal.

  • Spirantization: Stops become fricatives, usually between vowels.

  • Vowel reduction: Vowels in unstressed syllables become shwa or similar short lax vowel.
