Center 1 is the online coding HOC activities (I hope Google brings back their elf one--perfect for K-2). Center 2 is Builders--this year we'll have our Osmo coding, a mini robot to build (similar to Lego), and Bloxels to create programs with. Center 3 is our Bot Center where they will work with Ozobots, a Codeybot, and a Sphero. It's the one activity I can draw in a large number of our 40 teachers! I love HOC week!

I will show the students how to access both the Easy Tech coding lessons and then The Foos -I'm doing K-2 and my Gifted Teacher is doing 3rd - 5th - so they will have a choice between the gaming platform and the reasoning that is needed for coding - patterns, algorithms, modeling, etc....

I utilized the concept of pair programming with sixth graders who became easily frustrated when working through the levels in Course 1. I asked the student acting as "Guide on the Side" to give words-only, constructive support without solving the puzzle for their partner. It was a nice way to allow struggling students to "phone a friend," and allowed them to gain confidence, and to understand that asking for input from others is an important part of the learning process. . Hour of Code has made pair programming easy (and fair - for those super-competitive kids) - so that the teacher can track both team progress and individual student progress. Learn more about Pair Programming from Hour of Code HERE.

@koolteecha
Heather D.
