As the industry and society rapidly evolve parallelly, the focus is split between containing the demise of magazines and the rise of millennials and Generation Z as consumers, especially on the latter who is, according to Bloomberg, set to overtake the former by the end of 2020. https://goo.gl/XK44uo

The game is definitely an improvement over its predecessor, Trials Fusion, which was still enjoyable but took itself a bit too seriously. Rising is much better when it comes to levels and level progression, with the stages themselves being placed on a map of the world as you tour across each continent and visit (and desecrate) the landmarks there. Some of the most notable moments for me were performing multiple flips across the Grand Canyon, racing through multiple Hollywood film sets including a bank heist and a Wild West background, and finishing a stage by grabbing onto a Russian rocket before blasting off into space. Many stages also come with additional challenges with varying levels of difficulty. The easiest ones involve players having to beat the bronze time, whilst one of the more difficult ones required me to perform twelve backflips and eight frontflips without getting any faults. I did manage to beat it, but not before my rider had been through the grinder quite a few times before the ordeal was over.

One of the most refreshing aspects about Trials Rising is that it feels more like an arcade game, where the main ‘goal’ is to get the best time you possibly can. Given that many games nowadays tend to be very long in order to keep the players interested, the ability to just play half an hour of Trials and be satisfied with my progress in that time is very pleasant, and so it makes me glad that I bought it on the Switch because the Switch’s portability makes it the perfect system for a game like Trials.

Given that the challenges can be quite difficult, it helps that the controls feel solid and responsive. The bikes have a lot of weight to them and you can feel it when you try to start or stop yourself from flipping in mid-air, which means that if you crash you should only have yourself to blame and not the game. The game also goes out of its way to explain the controls via some tutorials for those who need it, but they can also skipped by those who are familiar with Trials games.

Of course, when you are spending all day performing stunts to impress the masses, it is important to make sure you look good. Thankfully there is a wide range of customisation options for the bikes and the riders, including helmets, tyres, rims, and the main frame of the bikes themselves. The way you unlock them is by earning ‘gear crates’ (which are essentially loot boxes), either via increasing your player level or by spending the in-game money you earn on more gear crates. For me, this seems unnecessary because the majority of the time, I just seem to end up with stickers for your bike instead of the gear that I want, and when I do get some gear, it ends up being something that I already own anyway. Considering that players can buy the gear they want in the in-game store via the in-game money anyway, using gear crates to try and win something that I can buy (and probably end up spending less money on overall) seems redundant. Thankfully the customisation gear is well worth their purchases, with my rider rocking a scooter helmet with a shark fin placed on top for added style, which definitely goes well with my outfits from the in-game sponsors.

Overall, Trials Rising is definitely a very fun game to play and the arcade style it brings is a nice change of pace in a world where games are getting longer and longer to keep the players interested.
