The ranch is a microcosm of the real world. It has different classes. Everyone is stuck in their classes. In the time period this takes place in, that's how much of the United States was. Just like the United States had classes, the ranch did too.

"He wore blue jean trousers, a flannel shirt, a black, unbuttoned vest and a black coat. His thumbs were stuck in his belt, on each side of a square steel buckle. On his head was a soiled brown Stetson hat, and he wore high-heeled boots and spurs to prove he was not a laboring man." (Steinbeck 20)
This a description of the boss. We see here that by the way he is standing and through what he is wearing, he is a higher class and has higher respect from everyone.
Morgan Holmes

Crooks is at the bottom of the hierarchy. This is because he is black. Even the people who are poor are above him just because they are white and he is not.

"I ain't wanted in the bunk house. and you ain't wanted in my room." (Steinback 68)
Crooks is forced to live all by himself, as the other workers don;t want to have to be near him. They seem him as below them. He is above no one in the ranch. This is because he is black. He doesn't want Lennie in his room because Lenny is white, and he thinks that white people will just boss him around because they're above him.
-Emma Toland

"'If he ain't, I guess I better look some place else,' she said playfully.
Lennie watched her, fascinated."( Steinbeck 31)
We see here that because of her well care and her high placement, she is automatically given attention and has the way of manipulating the minds that she knows she can. Like Lennie. She knows that he's not the smartest of the pack so she goes after him. But, since she is at the top, she can talk to them like she's talking down to them.
Morgan Holmes
