When Moishe came back from his traumatic experience where he witnessed a mass killing of Jews and barely escaped. He was telling the story to everyone and nobody believed him. This was the first glimpse of what was to come for Elie. Even before he knew it.

Elie saw the flames from the crematorium for the first time when Mrs. Schachter was yelling about them. When he arrived at Auschwitz he realized how grave the situation was. If he did not seem fit or healthy he would have been burning to death.

Free "I did not weep, and it pained me that I could not weep. But I was it of tears. And deep inside me, if I could have searched the recesses of my feeble conscience, I might have found something like: Free at last!..." pg 112

When Elie's dad dies right at the end of the book he could not cry for him. He was sad and cared about his father. But because of all that he's been thru and trying so hard for so long to survive. His father dying, even though it pained me, was more of a burdened lifted then a mourning.

Despair "'For God's sake, where is God' And from within me, I heard a voice answer: 'Where He is? This is where-hanging here from this gallows...' That night, the soup tasted of corpses" pg 65

A little boy was hung in the camp, and it took him 30 minutes after he dropped to die because he was too light. This incident made Elie almost completely lose faith in God and lose hope in living. He said that soup tasted like corpses that night. He was sure he was gonna die and God left him.

On the gruesome train ride where men were fighting and killing each other for a little bit of bread. only about a tenth of the people on that cart came out alive, including Elie and his father. This probably made him feel extremely lucky to be one of few who at least still have a small chance of surviving.
