Hays writes,
"Though the greater portions of the journals consist of the pragmatic details of the exploratory expedition (1804-1806) itself, there is a significant number of passages portraying their gradual understanding of the rugged wilderness of the American West. As to be expected, their early impressions are rather superficial, but the deeper the expedition goes into the interior of the Plains and Rockies, the more intricate they become... A wild and sublime nature elicits a sense of profound awe, and this awe elevates the soul of the viewer. By the time of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the wilderness was considered to be a dangerous, but awe-inspiring place rich in potential natural resources."

In the interview Shapiro did with British author, Johnathan Raban, Shapiro asks how his experience as an "outsider" traveling American inspired his book, "Hunting Mister Heartbreak," in which he writes about an Alabama native with an ingrained sense of place over generations, and Raban responds-
"It seems to me that outsiderdom is something that happens to you, not something that you deliberately construct. And my sense of my own displacement is the grit in the oyster that kind of nags at one. But I think that's a sort of consequence of fate, really. It's the product of having grown up in a certain way, very much as an outsider, an outsider in terms of class- we're talking about England where class is important... So I sort of spent this traveling childhood in which the family were always strangers and outsiders, trying to learn the ropes of the new place and never quite fitting in... So in this sense of oddity in place, this sense of outsiderness, of not quite belonging where you are and therefore having to figure it out, I think that sense of always trying to know what you're doing here... So probably the relationship between the overall narrator of 'Hunting Mister Heartbreak' and the personae of Rainbird and Rayburn and the other characters, I think is related to that. But I don't think it's a calculated pose- I think it's more a fate."

This song was invokes a strong sense of place, and as the title would imply, a feeling of being home. The song was used as a theme for the 2012 Olympics American gymnast team, and I remember vividly watching the Olympics in my Nana's living room while we were visiting my grandparents in California for the summer, feeling so comfortable and safe and just... home. My little sister also feels this same sense of home and safety when listening to this song as well. For a long time, and even still today, she cannot listen to this song without welling up with tears, remembering the times we spent with Nana at her house, when things seemed so much more simple and we still had that sense of childhood innocence and wonder. "One process in which identity is attached to a particular place is by a feeling that you belong to that place. It's a place in which you feel comfortable, for example, at home because the way you define yourself is symbolized by certain qualities of that place. The geographer Relph, has gone so far as to claim that 'to be human is to live in a world that is filled with significant places: to be human to have to know your place.'
Intense feelings of belonging to a place focus on domestic places, starting with a room, a house and a garden. Such places offer a felling of safety and refuge even though, this is by no means always the case. Strong feelings of identifying with a place may also concentrate on other places, for example, a sense of belonging to a place may occur at the local scale. One example is the brass bands, based in small villages and industrial towns. The events were famous everywhere, villages became very evident because of the local people. They came to support the band and often wearing the band's colours. Unconsciously, they brought together the local community and the music was part of the sense of place of inhabitants of villages and towns."
