She then tells the story of how she walks down to Carl after the attacks and tries to calm people down. An attacker suddenly rushes at her with a knife, and stabs her. But the attacker gets turned to dust by Carl, and she survives. In the dream there is a city and each building in the city has an assignment to find a code. If you can't say the code, you wake up again. Later April has a talk with the President. The president tells her that she is very disappointed in April, because she didn't tell her about the Carl-situation. She wanted April to come to her when she found the Carls. The President makes an announcement to the citizens of U.S.A. Coordinated terroristattacks start to happen all over the world where the carls are. But the Carls are unharmed in the attacks.
April wakes up in the middle of the night to a loud crack. She does not think anything of it to begin with. But when she checks the window, she gets shoved and falls to the floor. April thinks someone tried to shoot her and calls Robin to tell him about what happened. April still does not know about the terrorattacks yet. She looks around in her apartment, scared that someone is there. Maya has a web comic about anti-capitalist cats, uses the name "ThePurrletarian". So April suspects that Maya is the one who writes about the weird dreams.

Call with her parents
She calls her parents and speaks to them about her conversation with the President. After they talk about their concern of the dream and how it will affect them. They also talk a bit about the breakup, and that is where the conversation ends.

April attends to a satelite studio where videos of her sitting in front of the Manhattan skyline can be beamed to any show anywhere. There she meets the writer Peter Petrawicki. Peter belives that the Carls are a threatening and invading force, and that people should be afraid. She turns on the news and starts wondering why no one has contacted her. Her phone has died so she takes her laptop instead. As she expected there is a ton of new emails and she had replied to many of them even though she had not been awake.
She emails Andy telling him that she wants to do a shoot down in the street in a few hours.
Before showering she finally tweets something about the horrible news. She starts questioning if the Carl's is here to help.

In their quest for the solution of the Carls, they stumble upon a Wikipedia page of completed puzzles (The Dreamer community). They find that Maya under the alias "ThePurrletarian."
With the aid of Maya they manage to get a step further with the dream enigma. They find out that April May is also the only one who experiences movements in the dream, which is very unusual. 

June 1, April is on a book tour in Ann Arbor, Michigan. There she answers questions about the Carls, the dream and a belligerent Mexican cult. It is all dandy, until the crowd begins to doubt the Carls' potential for danger. The book tour ends in cancellation by protesters.

In resentment of the book tour and Maya, she sleeps with Miranda at her apartment.
