There is an interesting quote from Mitra (2008) who states the following:

“As the Latino population continues to grow, more schools are taking steps to better understand Latino families as assets.” (p.18)

Despite ones political affiliation I'm certain that we could all agree that there are issues in todays society that seem impossible to rectify.... The reality is that the same time and effort put into creating the institution could be put into finding alternative solutions.

As we deal with issues related to immigration and general differences within our educational environments, let's use all of the assets that we have available in order to make effective change that best serves our students.

Truth is... until it impacts your world you probably won't care.

Maybe I'm wrong... what are your thoughts?

Gooden (2012) has been quoted as saying:

“The major challenge is the stress. The reality is these leaders are working so hard in these types of positions as urban principals to save the school because they are passionate about it and seem to care for the students. However, what is left out of this discourse is they end up losing themselves in the process.” (p.82)

My reflection-
Does it always take great tragedies and tremendous loss for us to feel the sense of unity and the need to take care of each other? The last time I checked we are still "The United States of America"... Certainly not a perfect place but far better than most places with less opportunities.

There are leaders within our communities that work directly with our children in extremely stressful conditions. Whenever you get an opportunity, come alongside them and show them support by providing assistance how and whenever possible.

Let's show others how we get it done in the U.S.!

Some of you reading this article or watching this video may have been alive in 1964 and almost all of you know someone who was. The reality is that this wasn't that long ago. There were countless leaders across this nation that had to make hard decisions for important changes to actually take place. Are you in a position to make a historical contribution to a particular cause? What is that cause?

As stated by Sergiovanni (2000)
“The purpose of purposing is to build within the school a center of shared values that transforms it from a mere organization into a covenantal community.” (p.277)

Ghandi was willing to starve himself almost unto the point of death in order to bring attention to and eventually push the needle for change regarding issues within his community and nation. Social justice violations, inequity and deep seeded traditional disparities were topics that fueled his efforts. In your position of influence at your educational institution are you willing to miss a meal in order to potentially contribute time, effort or funds to the cause of helping someone that is unfairly treated within your unique community?

What are you waiting for?

We that are involved in the work of molding and shaping tomorrows minds are certainly handed heavy loads and lofty tasks. But the truth is that in other countries, educators are revered as the crafters of the nation. Although we don't receive such praise and joy-full accolades it will serve you well to keep in mind that many of the most influential leaders in our society were once influenced by an educator. You don't necessarily have to be a teacher or an instructor but simply a part of an educational institution, organization, agency, school, club or association. We are in this together and the thing that we often forget is that the people we help today will be the leaders of tomorrow.
Lead well!

Despite all of this convenient access to information and knowledge there are still vast disparities and injustices in many institutions across the nation.
