The power you have, the power we have together, united,  the power of those that make the rules and those that are told to follow the rules. We learned that power itself is neither good nor bad, but power can be used to help others or to hurt others. 

This country was founded on the worse abuse of power imaginable-- slavery. But racism and racist systems did not end when slavery ended. Other systems and laws were invented to try to maintain a society where white people held all the power and advantages over others. This is called white supremacy and it is something we still have to reckon with today to create a truly equal society where people are "judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character" as MLK famously dreamt. We still have work to do!  

 These spectacular and inspiring people are just 23 of countless others that worked to defeat these systems of power-- namely racism and sexism-- by defying and breaking through barriers that others imposed.  Some of these individuals risked life and limb to fight for justice and equal treatment. Some of these individuals spoke truth to power with their words, reporting, speeches, art, and songs. Some of these individuals became the first of their race or gender to achieve something that they were told they couldn't do just because of prejudice-- lighting the way for others to follow in their footsteps. All of them made what civil rights activist John Lewis called "Good Trouble" by working for equality and justice and standing up against racism and sexism.  They are changemakers, and so are you!
