This was made clear to me in my interview with Birch and from what I heard from Peter. That we're really there to help "our students." I am happy that we have already moved away from that some (it depends more on the teacher we're working with), but I really look forward to being seen as experts in, literally, "supporting learning" and supporting all students.

I think we can really help teachers, especially with Tier 1 strategies, if we're able to sit with them in unit planning stages and offer our expertise. We have so many capable people in our department that we should be able to have someone in pretty much any common collaboration time for subjects.

This will also allow the LS team to identify which students really need support. I feel like there are students who are in LS that doesn't need that much support or they were just in SI to get the "perks" of having additional accommodations. This will also be a good way for students to be more responsible with their learning because they will learn different strategies that will best fit their learning style.

We should, in my view, be almost like Teacher Coaches. This can be very intimidating to some of us, but I think it's important, and I hope we can we wear that badge with pride.

Yes, teachers absolutely SHOULD know basic Tier 1 strategies. However, if they need help, I think we should be their resource. It is, after all, reducing our workload in the long run. We are supporting learning by supporting teachers.

Literally, right before the pandemic hit, we did a 4-day cognitive coaching workshop with Ochan Kusuma Powell. It was required for LS and EAL teachers, knowing that we would be helping classroom teachers along. It was quite awesome and empowering.

For example, if a group of teachers is planning for a unit, and they are going to show a video, I want to be able to ask them - without fear of being seen as a "busybody" or what-not - if they've considered EAL kids, or students with auditory processing difficulties or even students with focusing difficulties. Are there subtitles? Can they watch the video later? What classroom management techniques is the teacher using to ensure students are focused?

I think there should be a specific intervention support at Tier 2 level, like a Learning Center, that will provide a specific support to, say, Reading or Math for small groups of students for certain amount of time. The data gathered here will be used if the intervention worked, or if the student will be evaluated if they qualified to the next tier. I think it should be added in the Inquiry process, too. I know we need more resources for this but having "intervention" teachers will really help students at their level.

This is a good website for to learn more about PBIS. I was at at MS in NYC that really did great with PBIS and it was a big part of their school culture. What was the coolest thing is that they had "student of the week" and "student of the Month" celebrations often and kids received loads of positive reinforcement. Be Safe, be Kind, be Responsible!!! If mistakes were made, these 3 things were always referenced and strategies were always shared to help students who needed to improve their behavior and positive behavior was constantly praised and celebrated...students on the fringe usually got on track due to peer pressure and learned to seek attention and praise for the right reasons.
