  • Stereotyping is a huge issue many people may not even realize they're doing. As inspiring nurses we need to treat every patient individually and not compare him/her. 
    • We cannot compare multiple patients we have that may be the same age or have the same illness because every individual has different needs and their own unique healing process.
  • The nurse does not treat the patient with respect or sympathy. As we learned in our discussion and class, we need to recognize each person has their own pain perceptions and believe the patient is experiencing pain when they tell us they are. 
    • We need to maintain a patients dignity. No patient volunteers to be in a hospital. It is our duty to make their time in a healthcare facility as comfortable as possible as treat them as an actual human being, not just a "task" like the video shows from the nurse.
  • I enjoyed this video because it also shows a patient has a life outside the hospital. To make a patient more comfortable, we should get to know a him/her for more than their disease, but their background (types of hobbies they enjoy, their family members, special memories they have, etc.).

  • As inspiring nurses, it is critical for us to understand one's culture and embrace it like our own. 
  • By embracing these differing cultures, we accept and respect these differences that make us unique, which will in turn help us provide quality care.
  • I used this image because being culturally competent includes being comfortable with one another and as we see in the image, they are all touching hands no matter their skin tone, which I thought was a powerful image.
  • Along with demonstrating cultural competence towards our patients, we need to understand our coworkers background and culture so we can build collaborate efficiently for our patients needs.

    In this video, we saw Nasma go to her doctors office for the first time in the United States, and had a difficult time understanding what was going on.

    • It is important to understand some patients may have a culture shock, like Nasma, when comparing medical facilities to their ones back in their home country.
      • This causes a patient to feel uncomfortable to ask questions and speak up. We always want to make a patient feel comfortable so they are able to speak their mind and tell us whats really wrong.
    • To help alleviate this shock, it is important to ask a patient to give us some background about where they used to go for treatment, the quality of treatment they received, as well as their preferences moving forward, such as preferences to a specific gender provider, foods they like to eat, or privacy restrictions.

    • Ethnocentrism is the idea that one believes their practices/beliefs are superior than another's. 
      • This is important in the healthcare setting because we may have patients who can't have certain procedures or medications due to religious or cultural constraints.
        • Some religions have more holistic approaches to being treated.
      • It is our duty as nurses to provide the best education on a treatment option and how it can be effective, but respect if a patient does not want it. We will then work with our team to come up with another alternative that suites the patient's lifestyle and needs.

    I included an image that says "no blood" because I thought about Jehovah's witnesses and how their religion forbids it.
