This week, we integrated literacy and numeracy into hands-on activities that engaged us deeply.

In our literacy activities, we began by exploring pre-reading skills, where we learned about word chunking by breaking down words into smaller sounds. This was a fun and educational process facilitated through engaging songs and the tactile experience of tearing paper. Additionally, we expanded our vocabulary and familiarized ourselves with different letter sounds by creating sound representations for letters A to H.

Our pre-writing practices were comprehensive, focusing on self-help skills such as zipping, snapping, lacing, and more. We also worked on developing fine motor skills through tracing, cutting, and pasting activities.

In numeracy, our learning was practical and hands-on. We started with fundamental skills like number recognition, one-to-one correspondence, subitizing, sorting, classifying, estimation, and basic non-standard measurement. We also practiced writing some numbers, applying our knowledge in real-world contexts.

What makes a story real, and what makes it purely a product of imagination?

Our exploration revealed the rich diversity of stories. We found that some stories, while not rooted in reality, still hold a special place in our hearts, like a group of animals leaving the zoo to sleep in a bedroom. On the other hand, we also discovered real storybooks about germs, hurricanes, and growing plants. We also noticed that some books were very realistic, using real photographs of humans, while others were purely animated.

Our exploration also led us to a fascinating paradox: stories about dragons, kings, queens, and even dinosaurs are often dismissed as 'not real stories,' yet these creatures did exist in some form. Similarly, we pondered over the fact that some books, like 'Germs Makes Me Sick,' are animated but tell real stories.

This week, we delved into enriching our literacy and numeracy skills by integrating ways to strengthen our gross and fine motor skills. These skills are crucial for our overall development and play a significant role in our learning process. We did this through activities such as finger painting and using playdough, which enhances our fine motor skills, and pre-writing tools like tracing letters and numbers, which improve our gross motor skills.

We also found immense joy in literacy, learning the alphabet and its sounds through musical songs from I to Z with letter representation. This also marks the beginning of understanding and connecting the letters with their sounds, a crucial step in learning to read and write. Our knowledge about the alphabet collectively paves the way for language acquisition and literacy, which is vital for us, early readers. Hence, our activity about creating alphabet alliteration songs and repeatedly singing them with the class, a collaborative effort, helped us to think of what letters can make, what the words start with each letter, and how to sound out more complex words. This has enabled us to begin blending and reading 3-letter words. This collaborative learning enhances our understanding and fosters a sense of community in our class.

In our writing activity, we used markers, brushes, and colored chalk to write the numbers from 11 - 20, some letters, and even shapes. Aside from that, we also practice early writing through different lines and strokes. This also helps us to recognize the formation of writings and how we will write them using different tools.

In numeracy, we delved into the months of the year, from January to December, and the special events we usually celebrate locally and internationally. For instance, we discussed celebrating New Year's Day in January, Valentine's Day in February, etc. This in-depth discussion helped us remember the months and events and understand the concept of time and sequence, a significant milestone in our numeracy skills development. It also gives us a cultural context for learning.

Aside from that, we also delved into understanding positional words and directions as we played hide-and-seek, following directions activity, and some directional songs.

We also actively participated in body movement activities such as hopscotch and a ring toss game that enabled us to strengthen balance and mobility, body coordination, and the integration of numeracy and shapes. This comprehensive approach to learning ensures that we not only understand numeracy but also its application in real-life situations.

Each book is labeled with a small piece of paper on the back cover, indicating its category. This system, based on the book's storyline, ensures that if a book is about tigers, cheetahs, or other sea creatures, it will be found in the 'animal section.' This meticulous organization makes it a breeze to locate the book we're looking for.

After a brief introduction to the book categories, we were given a tour of the school book cabinet. This was followed by a hands-on experience where we got to choose a book we were interested in. The only catch was, we had to find it in the different categories, which made the learning process more engaging and interactive.

Puppet Show Presents: The Three Little Pigs

In the past few weeks that we have been diving into the world of books, we were also curious about what makes a story unique, just like us!

We enjoyed watching a stick puppet show featuring the classic story of "The Three Little Pigs,” which eventually helped us understand the essential elements of storytelling: characters, plot, and setting, and how each serves its purpose. We discovered that characters can be anyone or anything the story focuses on, whether they are people, animals, or even talking objects. The plot consists of the actions in the story, and we learned that all stories have a beginning, middle, and end, which can be represented like a mountain. Finally, we explored the setting of the story, which in this case was the three little pigs’ houses.

As part of our exploration of storytelling elements, we further practiced our fine motor skills and exercised our imagination by creating our own puppet characters for a class book we plan to make in the future. Some of us made varying characters like cats, birds, and even food like a burger patty using colored markers, paper bags, and cut-outs of different shapes. It was a lot of fun!

Characters are not just figures in a story, they are the very essence of the narrative. They are the movers and drivers of the storyline, without them a book would just be a collection of words. Each character, with its unique role and personality, breathes life into the story.

With our activity today, we conjured up characters that are truly unique. They could be a superhero with duck feet or an animal that roars yet flies, existing only in our imagination and the puppet bag we made.

These characters will be used as we continue making our story relay in preparation for our big book-making and community storytelling on our culminating activity.

Remember, in the world of imagination, there are no boundaries, no limits.

Have you ever wondered how the Gingerbread Man was created?

Our event was not just a lecture but a collective effort to understand The Gingerbread Man. With the help of this classic tale, we explored the characters, storyline, and setting - sparking a conversation that led us to learn about the story elements. As we read the short story, we were all intrigued by a number of concepts and questions, such as 'Why is an animal talking?' or 'What makes an enemy exist?' Each of us contributed to capturing the actual significance of a story's parts, making it a truly inclusive experience.

This week, we have been focusing on improving their essential learning in mathematics and literacy skills, notably phoneme blending and isolation, and learning the measurements and tools we use to measure the different objects around us accurately.

In literacy, we've been exploring the—at,-en,—ot, and—in word families, which are essential for understanding phonics and building a solid foundation for reading and writing. We identify the beginning, middle, and ending sounds in a word and try substituting the letter sounds from what we see in the picture.

On the other hand, our concentration in the numeracy concept was estimation and measuring the quality of objects or people. Our challenge was to estimate the amount of water and rice using different measuring tools. These activities help us compare particular objects and allow us to think critically about how we solve problems and predict possible outcomes. Lastly, we discussed the various measuring tools for wet and dry ingredients. We compared and classified the sizes of objects using a tape measure, weighing scale, ruler, measuring cups, and spoons. Applying what we learned, we made pancakes and edible playdough, which can develop our fine motor skills and math skills in using utensils and measuring the ingredients, which also provides a sense of independence and builds social skills.

For our Filipino Friday activity, we learned polite expressions in the Filipino language, which people should use and value in everyday conversation. This activity is not just about learning a new language but also about understanding the importance of respect and appropriate communication values. These values are not just words, but they shape our interactions and relationships, making them more meaningful and respectful.

Now that we understand the elements and parts of a story, it's prime time for us to create our own book as a class.

Today's Story Relay allowed us to bring our unique characters to life. We used the parts of the story (Beginning, Middle, and End) as a guide for us to create our own tale. After listening to each other's suggestions, we decided that our setting would be a lovely house with a huge pool, right in the heart of the Savannah.

Aside from promoting creativity, our Story Relay taught us the importance of patience (waiting for our turn to speak) and collaboration. We had the chance to voice out our ideas and to listen to the suggestions of our classmates.

We're so excited for you to read our book soon! We had so much fun collaborating, listening, and being creative with each other.

Our final week was jam-packed with lots of fun and learning! We were introduced to “sequencing,” which means arrangement, order, or knowing what comes next.

Our teacher lined up different objects on the floor. By doing so, we can visually identify which object comes first, last, second, etc. We also discussed “before and after” during our lesson! We looked at the objects once again and watched our teacher point to certain objects. She'd ask us if it was “before” or “after” another object. We managed to identify the position of “before” and “after” through this game.

We also learned about symmetry and asymmetry. We were shown shapes like a heart and a circle, which we could fold perfectly. When we fold or cut these shapes in half, the cut is the same! If it isn't the same, that would make the object asymmetrical. We played a quick game where we looked for asymmetrical and symmetrical objects in the classroom.

Lastly, we learned about Morning, Afternoon, and Evening. We spent our classroom day outside, looking at the sky and learning how to “tell time” based on how bright or dark it was outside.

For literacy, we did a quick refresh on phonics and learned about rhyming words! Rhyming words all have one thing in common: Their sound! We learned that while certain words can share a sound, they might not share a meaning. We played different rhyming games such as Modified Hopscotch, Rhyme Puzzles, and Rhyme Flashcards. After reviewing the flashcards, we were challenged to give examples of our own rhymes. Our Hopscotch was also interesting because instead of numbers, we had words inside the boxes. We exercised our wrists by tossing a wooden block into a random square, and bouncing on one leg to get it. We would identify which word we landed on, then give three other words that sound similar to it! This activity exercised our fine motor skills and engaged our minds simultaneously.

To cap off our summer classes, we talked about the passage of time! We even connected it to our discussion about morning, afternoon, and evening.

We learned that time can pass in a blink of an eye, so we all tried to blink while counting up to 60. We repeated this activity but clapped our hands instead.

We played one last game inside the Breezy classroom. Our teacher gave examples of different routines/activities like “Going Home” and “Eating breakfast” and we had to decide if that was “Morning”, “Afternoon”, or “Evening”. We listened and ran to the correct answer!

Who would have thought that we would become authors one day?

On the final day of our summer classes, we enthusiastically shared our recently crafted story, "Birdy Saves the Day," with friends from the green room. This story beautifully illustrates the theme of friendship, showing that despite differences, it's possible to treat each other like family. We poured our creativity into writing a heartwarming story featuring our drawn puppet character. This experience taught us not only the actual application of setting, characters, and plot but also the importance of communication, teamwork, and engagement in and out of the classroom.

We even had the opportunity to showcase our favorite character in front of everyone! Some of us went all out and dressed up as the Cat in the that, an astronaut, a little mermaid, Big Bad Wolf, the Hungry Caterpillar, Gerald, and Hulk. It was fascinating to discover which characters our classmates chose, and it made us even more interested in reading the books these characters came from!

It's a wonderful reflection of everything we've learned about books and stories over the past few weeks!
