Designed in 1886 and completed in 1889 The Wainwright building designed by Louis Sullivan is considered ‘the first skyscraper to forgo the normal ornamentation used on skyscrapers at the time.’ (Glaeser, 2011) Sullivan developed the shape of the skyscraper at a time when technology, taste and economic forces converged violently and made it necessary to drop styles of the past. Sullivan’s theory that “Form follow function” as opposed to “Form follows precedent” is represented in this building and conforms to a modernist way of thinking.
Brutalism

Brutalism is sometimes classified as its own distinctive subtype, though it is considered a variant of post-war modernism. Despite its apparently appropriate name, Brutalism is derived from the French term, beton brut, which translates to “rough concrete”. It is essentially a style based on the shaped and molded forms of concrete, a thick, masonry variation of modernist architecture. Regardless of how the International style, Modernism, and Brutalism are classified, they all share the fundamental modernist principle promoted by Louis Sullivan and his contemporaries and successors, that “form forever follows function,” without relying on revivalist architectural styles of the past.

1. Artists strived to ignore the conservative values of art (realistic views of their subjects)
2. Experimentation!! Artists thought outside of the box when it came to shapes, colors and line work. This then lead to a theme of abstracting their subjects or ideas.
3. Exaggeration of the materials used
4. The way artists went about creating their art (the process). Technique also played a part in the depth of the piece *could be broken into two parts 4 & 5* ??
5. All of this was carried by a multitude of social and political changes during the era.
