Youth Aliyah, which translates to "youth immigration" in Hebrew, was a broader movement that included the Zionist organization that assisted in planning the teenagers' escape. Jewish leaders founded it in the 1930s because they thought that young Jews in Europe should be sent to Palestine, which was then ruled by the British, to help create a new Jewish homeland and escape growing antisemitism.

The yellow Star of David had to be worn on Jewish clothing. The German word for Jew, "Jude," was frequently printed on this symbol, which had to be worn conspicuously on the chest at all times.Not only was identification the goal, but Jews were to be isolated, dehumanized, and humiliated.

This song resonates with the Czech Jewish teens eluding Czechoslovakia because it was relevant during this time and its lyrics, specifically, “Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high, There's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby”. talk about a better future, and a place where things are better. When the teens were fleeing from Czechoslovakia away from the Nazis this song could represent their desire to find a safe place, “over the rainbow”, like Judy Garland.

Anne Marie and Judith Shaked, they were best friends during there time in Denmark and they just reunited.

During the fall of 1939, 150 Czech Jewish teens fled from Czechoslovakia to Denmark. This had been planned by different agencies and groups such as the youth division of the Jewish Agency, Zionist youth groups, Danish peace league, and multiple Jewish communities as well. Their ages ranged from 14-16. They were taken in by Danish families, living in foster homes and working on farms. Many years later, in 2012 these survivors reunited.

Judith Shaked was a Jewish teen who escaped the Nazis and fled to Denmark. She was one of the several teens who were selected by Youth Aliyah movement for a journey to Denmark She travelled to Denmark and lived in a foster family in the Danish countryside.
