No one keeps track of their lose change and its just a burden to have extra change in their pockets and wallets. Its such a waste of time for cashiers to have to be opening a new bag of pennies every time they run out. Pennies now a days are worthless and no one really cares of keeping them. If the production of pennies was discontinued, we could make more $1 coins out of that copper.

Counter-Argument: people may not use the penny as much as they used to, but it is still apart of today's economy, and the people do not want their pennies taken away. Con: Abraham is already on the 5 dollar bill, a much more valuable currency what does a better job of memorializing than the practically worthless penny.

In contradiction to Safire's article, 2/3 of all pennies don't drop out of circulation. Cites a source saying only 6 percent do, which is the same as other coinages.
