Amorsolo was born on May 30, 1892, in Paco, Manila.Don Fabián de la Rosa, his mother's
cousin, was also a Filipino painter. At the age of 13, Amorsolo became an
apprentice to De la Rosa, who would eventually become the advocate and guide to
Amorsolo's painting career. During this time, Amorsolo's mother embroidered to
earn money, while Amorsolo helped by selling water color postcards to a local
bookstore for 10 centavos each. His brother,
Pablo Amorsolo, was also a
painter. Amorsolo's first success as a young painter came in 1908, when his
painting Leyendo el periódico took second place
at the Bazar Escolta, a contest
organized by the Asociacion Internacional de Artistas. Between 1909 and
1914, he enrolled at the Art School of the Liceo de Manila^]

Using techniques of natural outdoor lighting and taking from the Impressionists of Europe, he mastered the skill of natural lighting in his paintings, and this trademark was later called his mastery of the “Philippine Sun.”

Afternoon meal of the rice workers by Fernando Amorsolo is a beautiful piece. It has good combination of colors especially the light ones. The story behind this painting is really the one that is really captivating. It shows how simple but happy the life of our great farmers was Simplicity was just so perfect of the scene such an inspiring and heart touching piece. everything looks so perfect and it suites to all Filipinos.

His works have inspired many an artist long after his death, and how a number of local cinematographers have adopted the look that saturates his paintings in motion pictures “ the Golden sunlight and the corresponding shadows “ is proof of Amorsolo’s genius as an artist. It can be argued that no other Philippine painter could match his ability to capture gloriously both idealized countryside imagery and the awe-inspiring beauty of nature’s glow and luminescence.

He was one of the first Filipino modernists along with Galo Ocampo and Victorio C. Edades who broke away from Fernando Amorsolo's romanticism of Philippine scenes. According to restorer Helmuth Josef Zotter, Francisco's art "is a prime example of linear painting where lines and contours appear like cutouts."

Its 2006 restoration was under Orlando Abinion’s supervision and was funded by the US Department of State’s Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation. Abinion's team worked on the restoration in 2006 and 2007, with conservation treatment activities including solubility testing, facing and consolidation of paint layers, cleaning of surfaces and removal of old lining and re-lining, removal of facing, surface dirt and old varnish, grafting of holes and leveling lacunae, and preliminary and final retouching.
