Everyone has the right to life from the moment of conception, and taking away a life is stealing from whomever is murdered, aborted, or unwound. The process of unwinding is practically no different than abortion. Both abortion and unwinding are used to take the life of one person in order to better the life of another. The Unwind may sometimes be aware of his or her fate, but for others, the realization is a paralyzing shock of terror. Unwinding is the "loophole" for abortion since in the novel abortion is illegal. The process of unwinding takes place when the unwanted child is between the ages of thirteen and eighteen. Once the child turns eighteen, he or she is now a legal adult and the parents of the child can no longer control if the child is unwound or not. In chapter ten, Connor, Lev, and Risa have a conversation about whether or not running for their lives would be stealing, since they are terrified of being unwound, but what they do not realize is by being unwound, the government is stealing from them.
