Unwinding is murder. Unwinding is also stealing, and it is the same concept as abortion. Everyone has the right to life from the moment of conception, and taking away a life is stealing from whomever is murdered, aborted, or unwound. The process of unwinding is practically no different than abortion. Both abortion and unwinding are used to take the life of one person in order to better the life of another. Abortion is the murder of a fetus in the womb because the mother does not want to have a child; therefore, abortion betters the life of the mother since the baby is no longer "a burden" and will no longer affect the mother's immediate life.

In a similar way, unwinding people is when organs and other body parts are removed from whomever is being unwound, known as an Unwind; the body parts are then dispersed throughout the nation and used to save other people's lives. The Unwind may sometimes be aware of his or her fate, but for others, the realization is a paralyzing shock of terror. Unwinding is the "loophole" for abortion since in the novel abortion is illegal. The process of unwinding takes place when the unwanted child is between the ages of thirteen and eighteen. Once the child turns eighteen, he or she is now a legal adult and the parents of the child can no longer control if the child is unwound or not. Unwinding does not make you "alive, just in a divided state;" it makes you a victim of nonconsensual dismemberment and murder.

It is also about learning that all life has a purpose, and no one should have his or her life taken away without any form of consent. The novel depicts abortion as illegal, but truly, unwinding is the same concept. The only difference: the children are older and fully developed.

Neal Shusterman does an astounding job of showing the reader the perspective of a child that knows his or her parents do not want to have the child in their lives. The plot and events are extreme eye openers, and the readers are shown what happens when children are forced to mature faster than they should have to. Also, the main characters Connor, Risa, and Lev go through major changes and face decisions and dangers no child should ever have to go through.

When people are unwound, they enter into what is known as a "divided state." When someone enters the divided state, his or her body parts are separated out and given to other living humans. In the eyes of the law, the unwound person is still technically alive, since every part of his or her body is still living and functioning. However, the original Unwind now ceases to exist as one person. In chapter ten, Connor, Lev, and Risa have a conversation about whether or not running for their lives would be stealing, since they are terrified of being unwound, but what they do not realize is by being unwound, the government is stealing from them. Their lives are their choice, and by unwinding them, the government steals their lives and chances to grow up and develop into their own persons.
