When Plessy v. Ferguson was decided, what upheld the decision, and what doctrine supported the Supreme Court decisions?

Plessy v Ferguson was decided on May 18,1896. The decision was upheld because Plessy did not agree with the case. He didn't believe that there was an accurate way to determine whether someone was a 100% white or black. Since Louisiana was so diverse in different nationalities it was almost impossible to point out who belonged where. Later on, the doctrine that supported the Supreme Court decision was called "Separate but Equal."
Citation:
McNeese, Tim. “Plessy Meets Ferguson.” Plessy v. Key investors withdrew their shares, subsequently causing more panic. During this extreme plumet in the economy, 9,000 banks failed.
