Good question! My journey to becoming an English teacher was filled with people who supported me, but the moment that stands out is when some classmates and I were talking about learning grammar in an undergraduate class and my professor, Melody Graulich, said to me, "Linda, how will you teach grammar when you become an English teacher?" That question started me wondering, imagining myself for the first time as a teacher...and here I am.

After class one morning, my Bio 1102 professor noticed I was doing well in the class and pulled me aside to talk. He asked me to join his honors research group, and I reluctantly accepted his offer. But these discussions felt a lot more like a book club conversation instead of a teacher lecturing her students.

This example really touched me since it showed how much Dr. Shelden cared about the subject matter and our opinions about what we were learning. She welcomed us to bounce around and expand our ideas while providing the necessary guidance if we may have gotten off-track. This is what I would like to emulate in my future classes.

The power of can't can be a disabler. For me it was a motivator. I was told I can't be, ... I can't do, .... I chose not to be limited by their perceptions of what I had been, to move to what I would become....

As a child my family had lots of illustrated nonfiction children’s books in a variety of subjects. I was always most drawn to biology, but specifically ecology and comparative anatomy books (or the equivalent for a child).
They were illustrated beautifully by someone that was clearly an artist and understood what they were explaining.

I want to be a scientific illustrator for ecology and conservation biology to spread understanding of the importance and causes within each.
I want to inspire a fascination with ecology in other children.

During my career, I've had my share of good bosses and bad bosses, and an experience with one particularly bad boss drove me to consider a career in management. This boss made efforts to belittle and discourage as many people as he could who worked under him, and lead to several people just quitting without notice, leaving those behind to take even more abuse as we could no longer meet deadlines. That experience drove me to start thinking about what I would do to build up my team so we could be high performing and genuinely enjoy the work we did. I never got to implement those thoughts at that job, but at my next 2 jobs, I used that thought process to become a leader within my teams, and eventually lead me to start here in engineering management to take my career path in that direction

I suppose my journey to becoming a teacher began with helping a friend. Years ago, I met a young woman who, for reasons beyond her control, had not been able to finish high school. She was highly intelligent and wanted to go to college, but her family wasn't supportive. So I started tutoring her for her GED. To my surprise, I actually wasn't terrible at teaching. In fact I enjoyed it. It was a great learning experience for both of us. And my friend? She's a grad student at Notre Dame now.

I was always told growing up that I could be whatever I wanted to be. I realized I only knew what I didn’t want to be and ended up deciding to pursue a career in what I loved most, the ocean and marine life. And it’s been a bit difficult but knowing that I’ll love what I do and can show others that it’s possible keeps me going!

AP Bio was the first AP class I had ever taken in high school and I struggled with the additional workload and detailed content. Although I was/am a straight A student, I made a 79 as my midterm grade. However, I worked really hard the following half of the year and changed my study methods. In the end, I finished the year with a 94! I think this shows that sometimes you need to change the way you do things to adapt to different situations.
