Through Lorraine Hansberry’s portrayal of Beneatha goals of being a doctor and going to medical school, she shows the sexism and misogyny against women and the stigma of women being independent. Though much has improved since the release of A Raisin in the Sun, many women, and especially women of color, still face descrimination and a harder time getting a self sufficient job, and many still have the belief that women belong in the house and need a husband.

By including scenes of her family dissuading Beneatha not to follow her dream of becoming a doctor, Lorraine Hansberry starts a conversation about the expectation of a woman's life in the 1950s. Men were the designated "providers" for the family, while women were expected to cook, clean, and take care of children. In her acclaimed play, A Raisin in the Sun, Hansberry reveals the barriers a black woman faces in order to progress in society.
