When using the internet it is easy to forget your manners. We don't always think of the person behind the computer screen when communicating online. Although emojis can display some emotions It is often difficult to express your true feelings online. Other people cant see our facial expressions or hear the tone of our voices and for these reasons things may be misconstrued. For example, sarcasm is often difficult as the tone of our voice often indicates sarcasm in face to face interactions.
It is important that we keep the human in mind when we are communicating online. It is sometimes easier to say things online that we wouldn't normally say. When on an online forum try to decide whether or not what you are about to say is something you would say to that persons face. And if not for the other persons sake think about the consequences your words could have on you. When words are written and sent on the internet they are out there in cyberspace forever. If someone wants to use those words against you they have the ability to recover them.

Source: The Core Rules of Netiquette.

It is important to remember where you are in cyberspace. The way you may communicate with your friends on Instagram or Snapchat should not be the same way you communicate with someone in a professional setting. Because the internet is so widely used it is important that you represent yourself in an appropriate way. If you were to abbreviate words when talking to a future employer or a teacher it may seem like you don't care. Abbreviating words and using texting language may be perfectly ok when talking to your friends. It is also important to think about your usernames and emails. If you choose to make your email address something like hotmamma82 would you feel comfortable saying it out loud or giving it to a professional? It is ok to make separate accounts or addresses but if you would rather streamline make sure it is something that represents you in a way you want to be represented.

Source: 7 Rules to Teach Kids Online Etiquette, accessed 2/1/16 https://www.commonsensemedia.org/blog/7-rules-to-teach-kids-online-etiquette

Teaching Students How to Protect & Respect Privacy

Teaching children the seriousness of netiquette rules can be tricky. A hands on and fun way to teach children about protecting other people's privacy on the internet is to have the children perform skits! For younger grades the teacher can write the skits and the students can perform. But for older grades students can create their own. Each skit can have a topic regarding privacy. For example, "Emily met Jon through a online chat on club penguin. They have been talking for an hour and Jon asks for Emily's number. Act out what Emily should do." The kids will work in groups to create skits. Then they will preform there skit in front of the class. This is a good way to gage if the students comprehends that 1. "Emily" should not give out private information" to strangers online and 2. Emily should not be talking to strangers on any site. Also after skits are preformed the class can have an honest and open discussion about different privacy issues/concerns they might have.

Teaching Students to Remember the Human

As teachers it is necessary that we teach our students the importance of online etiquette. Most of our students are using technology every day and will most likely use technology in their futures. One of the main ways people communicate today is on the internet and through text message. As with everything there are certain do's and don'ts when it comes to the internet. One of the main rules of netiquette is to remember the human. We need to remind our students that when they are on an online forum they are not just talking to a computer screen. There is a person on the other end who they may be speaking to. A good way to teach children to remember the human is to have them participate in skits. This could be similar to the skits used when discussing bullying. Another way to teach this netiquette would be by giving students sheets of paper with texts of messages that may not come across clearly. For example saying that students may use sarcastically which may not come across that way when there is no emotion or tone of voice behind them. You would then explain that although this may be funny in person someone could easily confuse this message online. This way the students can see what it may be like to be on the receiving end of these sorts of messages and conversations.
