Lies Like Wildfire

Student Model
May 26, 2022
Lies Like Wildfire by Jennifer Lynn Alvarez
Rating: 4.5/5

Mo, Luke, Violet, Drummer, and Hannah have been best friends their entire lives. Everyone around town knows them as the "monsters," a nickname they gained after they all played the wild things in a performance of Where the Wild Things Are when they were little kids. The monsters spend every summer together, swimming, watching movies, going on adventures, and doing everything else their hearts desire. On a hot, dry, summer afternoon during their last summer before college, the monsters visited the Gap Lake, the deepest swimming hole in the mountains, just as they'd done many times before. All was well until Luke decided to light a pipe he'd brought along and Hannah violently hit it from his hands. The pipe hit the ground of the forest which was currently at extreme risk of wildfire. Next thing they knew, the monsters were the culprits of one of the largest and most damaging wildfires. When questioned by the police they did what they thought was their only choice: lie. Suddenly the monsters are rapped in too many lies to juggle and it's not long before one of them cracks. And when one monster cracks - they bring the rest down with them.

I loved this book and would highly recommend it. The plot is full of unexpected twists and secrets you would never expect. It is extremely engaging and hard to put down!

Student Model Review

January 2, 2022
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
Rating: 5/5

Ryland Grace finds himself the sole survivor of the Hail Mary voyage, a last ditch effort to save humanity. There is one problem, the mission required him to be put in a coma, and he woke up with no memories of where he is or why. As his memories return he has to navigate a new solar system in an attempt to find a solution to earths problem. Ryland is faced with difficult situations one after another. He is left to face each obstacle completely alone. Or so he thought.
This is a well written Sci-Fiction book similar to another of Andy Weir's books, The Martian. With much higher stakes, this book exceeded my expectations and is (in my opinion) a far better book than The Martian. It's hard to put down once you've started reading it, and does a good job balancing real science with sci-fiction. Not only did I enjoy the book immensely, but it taught me a few things about the real world and how it works. It is perfect for anyone who enjoys science and reading.

January 23rd, 2022
Zev C.
The boxer by Reinhard Kleist
Rating 4.5/5

Poland, 1941. Sixteen-year-old Harry Haft is sent to Auschwitz. When he is forced to fight against other inmates for the amusement of the SS officers, Haft shows extraordinary strength and courage, and a determination to survive. As the Soviet Army advances in April 1945, he makes a daring escape from the Nazis. After negotiating the turmoil of postwar Poland, Haft immigrates to the United States and establishes himself as a professional prizefighter, remaining undefeated until he faces heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano in 1949. But there is another side to the stone faced boxer. Hes struggling to escape the memories of the fiancée he left behind in Poland.
I found this graphic novel to be very powerful and captivating, as it is also based on a true story. Not only is the writing fantastic but on every page the story comes to life with the amazing art. I would highly recommend this book!

Octavia Meeks
December 19, 2022
Gemina: The Illuminae files_02 by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
Rating: 4/5

Hanna Donnelly is the daughter of Commander Charles aboard spaceship Heimdall. She gives out an appearance of being a spoiled rich girl, but when things start to go wrong, she is pushed to her limits. She also thought her life was boring, but nothing is boring about what happens next. Aboard the ship they are raising a parasitic linguastata called lamina which are apex-level predators known for their hostile temperaments and being aggressive over their territory. But on the night where they are supposed to hatch, their space ship gets invaded and a group of people take control over it. As they fight for their lives and others, they sometimes will fail to see the most important details standing in front of them.
With many twists and turns, Gemina is a very good and intriguing second book to the Illuminae Files series. It also has an interesting format in comparison to other books, that combines things like art and surveillance footage to tell a story. Although this format can get confusing and is sometimes hard to follow, it adds another layer to the story and even makes it easier to understand the characters more. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes a lot of plot twists and high risk scenes.

12/31/2022

The Epic Of Gilgamesh, translated by Nancy Sandars

Rating: 4.5/5

Gilgamesh is the tyrannical leader of Uruk, two-thirds god and one-third human he remains unchallenged until, eventually tired of the rule of Gilgamesh, the people of Uruk pray to the gods and ask them to make an equal to Gilgamesh. Hearing this plea, the gods would make Enkidu, who would eventually meet Gilgamesh and challenge him to combat, their battle would end with a victorious Gilgamesh instead offering friendship to Enkidu, this friendship would become a deep comradery between the two and Enkidu would persuade Gilgamesh to become a less tyrannical leader. Eventually, Gilgamesh would become bored with his life as king of Uruk and decide to go on great adventures with Enkidu, though these eventually lead to Enkidu being cursed to death and Gilgamesh in his grief seeking the secret to immortality.

The epic of Gilgamesh is the oldest piece of literature that we know of, but it still holds up as a great story. The translation I read likely isn't the most accurate but it is more clear of a story as it bridges gaps where parts of the original story are missing. Overall it's a good read and a compelling story, It's a surprisingly short story so it may be good for people who don't have a lot of free time, and I would recommend it for most people who enjoy history or even just fantasy.

The United States of America saw increasing oppression, corruption, and taxation happening in The United States of America. The American Civil War was fought between the United States of America and the Confederate States of America. A series of events led the south to leave the Union in 1861. The conflict started as a result of the long-term disagreement over slavery.

Bridgette Baker
Pegasus: The Flame of Olympus by Kate O'Hearn
Rating: 5/5
1/6/23

Emily Jacobs, a thirteen year-old girl living in an apartment in Manhattan, feels her life changing forever when Pegasus crashes on her roof during a storm. He has been badly wounded from a ruthless war going on in Olympus; vicious, four-armed beasts called Nirads invaded and have left the world in ruins. Emily cares for him with the help of a boy from her school named Joel. After a few days, the Nirads force them to flee from the roof on the back of the stallion and hide in a park close by. The CRU, a mysterious government branch with ill intentions, will stop at nothing to capture the winged horse that was sighted flying down the street in New York City. It is discovered that Pegasus is on a mission that could very well revive Olympus and stop the Nirads from wrecking Earth any further if he succeeds.

Paelen is a thief from Olympus. He ran away when he saw the Nirads could not be defeated, aiming to steal the golden bridle from Pegasus, when they were both struck by lightning and ended up on Earth. Paelen wakes up in a hospital with a multitude of injuries, being questioned by the police and then taken by the CRU when his blood tests are revealed. He is tortured for information but isn't as affected as a human would have been and attempts escape many times. He has a unique ability, the power to stretch his limbs and fit into tight spaces. He decides to help Pegasus with his quest when they finally meet again later on, and develops a lot as a character.

I've been reading this series since elementary school, but I can say with certainty that this book in particular is my favourite. Each character has their own unique, interesting personality and they get along well together. It has simpler wording (meant for ages 8-12) but I have found that even as I get older I don't get tired of it. If you are intrigued by fantasy or a mix of fantasy in the modern world, I would strongly recommend!

Hope Stanley
January 6, 2023
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
Rating: 5/5

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky is a novel following the life of Charlie, a seemingly average quiet guy who writes letters to an anonymous recipient. Through his letters, this book follows Charlie's journey throughout his freshman year of high school and the group of "edgy" seniors he befriends. One of whom, named Sam, he falls in love with only to be constantly turned down until right before she leaves for college. Charlie is also an avid reader and forms a strong connection with his English teacher, Bill, who gives Charlie extra material to broaden his horizons; thus giving Charlie more retrospect throughout the story. As the story goes on we can see Charlie change from a sweet and quiet kid to still kind but sad and self destructive person as he turns to drugs after a fight in his friend group. Though this book isn't based on action, I think what really makes it so powerful is each little scene that builds all the characters. On the outside for example, Charlie's friend Patrick might seem like another goofball but we learn about his secret relationship with the quarterback and his dreams in life, only making us fall in love with him more. Each of the characters has their flaws but through the seemingly simple stories scattered along the pages, we get to learn each of these precious unique people, only to make us find more empathy with the world. I think that a very powerful relationship in this novel is the connection between Charlie and his sister, Candace. Throughout the novel we find their bond grow stronger as Candace deals with an on and off relationship with her abusive boyfriend and only to become pregnant with his child. Charlie, with his heart of gold, takes his sister to go get an abortion and from then on they grew even closer. Something that really stood out to me was how important it was to Charlie to be told he was loved. Charlie (being the INFP he is) would always write in his letters about his gratitude for his friends and put in so much effort for Christmas gifts and stuff, but when the favor was returned he would always cherish it like a rare gem. This brings me to assume he never really got much of this loving affirmation as a kid, which is to be expected as this book was written in the nineties. Charlie fondly notes when his sister hugged him for the first time and how good and loved he felt, which personally makes me sort of sad. Stephen Chbosky really does an excellent job of creating characters to love and connect with despite their slew of "problems. The moral of the story I would say is up to interpretation, though I think The Perks of Being a Wallflower was written for those who don't really about the lives of those who are quiet or "unimportant". It really reflects everyone's uniqueness with the way we find ourselves even loving Bob the stoner. It tells us that a wallflower should not be dismissed.
As for recommendations, I am a big fan of young adult novels like these that include some element of death, illness, or drugs, so if you're also a fan I recommend reading this.

Junco Dammarell
Jan 7, 2022
The game of Love and death
Rating: 4.5/5

The game of Love and Death takes place in Seattle during the great depression, Love and Death are two gods who like to play games of chance, using humans as the players. They keep playing games because Love has never one, Death always ends up causing tragedy and heartbreak. The gods choose two babies as players, Death chooses Flora Saudade, a poor African american girl, and Love chooses Henry Bishop, a wealthy white boy. If Flora and Henry fall in love by the time they are 17, Love wins, but if they never fall in love, Death wins and gets to kill Flora. Flora wants to be a pilot, but at night sings at a Jazz bar, which she is very good at doing. Henry was adopted after his parents died by a rich reporter, and him and the mans son, Ethan, are very good friends and go out to write stories for the paper together. This is where Henry sees Flora, as he goes to interview the chief about an airplane at Sand Point. He finds out where she works and goes to watch her every night. Death gets afraid that they might fall in love so sh transforms into a beautiful young girl named Helen to try to win Henry's heart. Love on the other hand, knows that Ethan is in Love with Henry and transforms into a young man called James to win over Ethan's heart so he doesn't interfere in Henry and Flora's love. A lot of tension comes between Henry and Flora because she is scared about dating Henry because they would be a mixed race couple. Even more hardships ensue as liquor inspection officers threaten to shut down Flora's club simply because she is black. Henry and Flora continue to support each other through this though, and become even closer. By the end, Flora and Henry fall in love, and the gods have to realize that they cant control humankind and even though death happens to all of us, love can still win.

I really like this book, there were some parts that made me laugh and some parts that made me really sad. It also explores some deeper subjects and the writing style is beautiful.

Her name is hardly known in the journalistic world which makes it all the more surprising when Evelyn Hugo, a 79-year-old Old Hollywood star specifically requests Monique to interview her for a memoir.

The book flips between Evelyn’s account of her life, divided by the times she was married to each of her seven husbands: Ernie Diaz, Don Adler, Mick Riva, Rex North, Harry Cameron, Max Girard, and Robert Jameison and the reasons she married and divorced them and how they affected her life and career.

I highly recommend this book. It’s very entertaining, especially if you enjoy historical fiction and drama. This format of this book also makes interesting, it switches from the perspective of Monique interviewing Evelyn and also just living her life and the perspective of Evelyn recounting her life.

Judah B.
November 20, 2023
The Rangers Apprentice The Sorcerer of the North By John Flanagan
Rating: 3/5

To understand this book you would have to read the first couple in the series so I am writing for people who have already read up to this part in the series. Will is sent to his first assignment as a new ranger and travels there immediately. He finds a hurt dog on the way and adopts her as his own. Will finds his new home in his fief, but quickly realizes that he was sent to a place that had a pretty bad army. Will spends the next couple of weeks trying to get the army in shape, and the rulers of the fief later realize that he was right after a group of Skadians raid the fief.
Will is then sent into a territory full of sorcery. He is sent in disguise, but what he doesn't realize is that there is someone he knows that is already at the castle he was sent too. Will ends up having a pretty good adventure running through the woods at night trying to find out the mystery of the sorcerer of the north.
Although I don't think this was the best book in the series it was still a very good book. It was pretty cool to see what happened after Will became a fully fledged ranger, instead of the author just ending the series right after the book before this.

Octavia Meeks
May 29th, 2023
Summer's Edge by Dana Mele
Rating: 5/5

This story starts by following Chelsea as she reunites with her friends at this lake house almost a year after her best friend, Emily, tragically died. The once inseparable group now has grown distant, but are brought back together by a mysterious invitation in the same house that Emily died in. As tension rises from puzzling coincidences and creepy whispers, more information is revealed about what actually happened to Emily.
This book is very entertaining and will leave you guessing what will happen next. The way Mele writes leaves you on the edge of you seat as well as making you feel like you're putting the puzzle pieces together as the narrator does. As the story unfolds it'll be a struggle to figure out who is trustworthy and who is in the wrong. The shock ending will flip everything you thought was happening upside down and change your opinion on all of the characters. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery and overall rate it 5/5.

Junco Dammarell
June 9, 2023
House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland
Rating: 4.5/5

House of hollow is a fantasy/thriller novel with protagonist Iris Hollow. Ten years ago on new years eve, she and her two older sisters Grey and Vivi went missing. A month later, they showed up naked and the oldest, Grey, was holding a knife in her hand. They go through some supernatural changes and develop the abilities to manipulate others with their touch. Their father, Gabe, was convinced that the girls were not his daughters, and eventually killed himself after being sent to a psych ward. Iris just wants to live a normal life, different from her sisters, Grey, the oldest, is now a famous model and fashion designer, and Vivi, the middle child, is part of a popular rock band. Grey goes missing mysteriously and after recruiting Tyler, Grey's boyfriend, they go out to find her. A man with a bull skull mask chases them throughout the entire story, and eventually it is up to Iris and Tyler to save Grey and Vivi’s lives. During and after rescuing the sisters, you learn some chilling things about their disappearance, and slowly realize something is wrong. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a fantasy novel, it’s suspenseful and has very good descriptive writing. The end shocked me because I didn't even see the plot twist coming.

Hope Stanley
June 8th, 2023
Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner
Rating: 5/5

Crying in H Mart is a heart breaking memoir written by Michelle Zauner, a musician most notably known for the indie rock band Japanese Breakfast. The memoir follows how in 2014 Michelle's life was put on hold to take care of her mother suffering from stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Before her mother's illness, Michelle and her mother had a terrible relationship. Michelle's desire for freedom and change challenged her mother's rigid and traditional ideals of what family should look like. Michelle consequently went in and out of living at home and staying with friends, doing drugs, and trying to make way in the music scene. As she began to mature so did her relationship with her mother. By the age of 25, after college and the years of distance, Michelle and her mother finally had a good relationship.
This newfound stability could only last for so long. Early 2014, Michelle was living in Philadelphia with her first band "Big Little League", who had put out and album and had plans to tour later in the year; As well as being in a long distance relationship with her boyfriend Peter. On her way to meet up with her friends she received a call from her parents. She knew that her mom had been going through some health issues prior, but it was all minor compared to the reality of her condition. Her mom had stage four pancreatic cancer.
Michelle dropped all her other concerns and immediately booked a flight back to Eugene. She told herself that she was going to be the perfect daughter her mother had, that she was going to take perfect care of her mother and make her as happy as she can be, and then her mother can overcome her illness.
"Crying in H Mart" continues to tell Michelle's story in vivid and graphic detail as she watches her mom slowly fall prey to the cancer. The novel also explores how as her mom slips away she feels her Korean heritage is slipping away too. "Crying in H Mart" is really a truly beautiful and emotional novel and I loved every bit of it. It's incredibly sad (I cried a lot) but captures the misery and tragedy of Michelle's relationship with her mother so beautifully. If you are interested in reading this book, I wouldn't suggest it for those who have trauma surrounding cancer or gore sensitivity. Because of cancer's nature of killing you slowly there are some graphic portions of the book, but it's less disturbing as it is sad.
"Crying in H Mart" by Michelle Zauner is a novel sharing Michelle's relationship with her mom and her Korean heritage as her mother slowly dies of cancer. I would rate it 5/5 stars- it's absolutely incredible and so well crafted. Highly recommend if you can handle the sadness of the book.

A second book in a trilogy after the first book Chains, Forge begins after Curzon has been abandoned by Isabel, a fellow slave who has freed him from imprisonment at the end of the last book. In Forge he fights in the war and sees a lot of the fighting and damage/death, he also served a hard winter in Valley Forge. He faces a lot of racism from his fellow soldiers. He gets court-martialed and given back to Bellingham, his former owner, where he finds that Bellingham also has Isabel as his maid. Isabel and Curzon make plans to escape and try to find Isabel's sister Ruth. The French joined the war to help the Americans which helped Curzon and the patriots. Curzon and Isabel tie Bellingham up and escape with the army.

The book is really good. When I was reading I could see the similarities between Forge and the first book Chains. Although it was good, I still like Chains better. Forge was a good read and I recommend it if you like stories about slaves escaping.

How To Be An Antiracist

Ema Doyle

6-9-2023

How To Be An Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi

Rating: 9/10

For this book review, I decided to do my review on How To Be An Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi. It is a nonfiction book in the form of a memoir on the author. It is the kind of book where you grow with the narrator, as he is using his stories and experiences to becoming an antiracist. There is lots of reflection throughout the book, including room for the reader to do the same about their own racial ideas. Kendi discusses all of his experiences and the ways he learned about racism, its history, and ways to combat it. I learned that I can also look into my own life and its patterns and do the same as him. It really made me think about race and society in ways I never have before. He discusses it with lots of unique ideas, perspectives, and resolutions. I would say that some of the things he discusses can be flagged as controversial, but he also mentions that with almost anything race related, it is almost always controversial, which is a very interesting thing to think about. One big thing I took away from the book is his words on the difference between “not racist” and “antiracist”. Initially, they would always seem like the same term, but he breaks it down and explains it and offers a completely different perspective, which I really like. I will say again, a lot of the things he talks about are such new and interesting ideas which I really enjoyed, and made me really glad I read the book. Overall, if you want a deep read, with commentary, valuable information, and a fresh perspective, and are willing to read something less than filtered, I would definitely recommend this memoir. I personally rate it 9/10.
