Villa Toeplitz stands on the hill to the east of Sant'Ambrogio, an area of Varese at the foot of the Sacro Monte, in a dominant position towards Monte Orsa, Brunate, the Comasco, the plain of Induno.
Villa Toeplitz in history
The Villa, built in 1901, takes its name from the Polish banker Giuseppe Toeplitz, who bought it in 1914. Previously it had been used by the German family Hannesen as a country residence.
Toeplitz immediately put his hand to the pre-existing structure, making special noteworthy embellishments to the park, expanded to almost eight hectares, with canalizations and water features, also suggested by his wife, Edvige Mrozowska, and designed by a famous French gardener.
The ambitious design provided for a real hydraulic engineering work to channel the water of the nearby Monte Martica: the water games, consisting of a monumental staircase and porphyry waterfalls interrupted by mosaic fountains and gray Carrara marble, were opened between the vegetation of the Park, modified by Toeplitz with the plant of cypress hedges and coniferous tree patches. The villa and the park soon became the hub of an intense cultural life revolving around Donna Edvige.

The couple, deeply religious, decided also the construction of a chapel, for which the architect Goraska was called from Poland, who gave life to a small masterpiece. The frescoes were instead commissioned to the famous Polish painter Rosen. Edvige, an intelligent and eclectic woman, was also interested in astronomy: so she built a small, fully equipped Observatory. On the death of Giuseppe Toeplitz, the villa and the park passed on to his wife and son Ludovico who, after the end of the Second World War, ceded them to the Mocchetti di Legnano brothers. In 1972 the property was acquired by the Municipality of Varese, which decided to open the park to the public. Currently the Villa houses one of the decentralized offices of the University of Insubria.

The Villa Toeplitz Park
Today it extends over an area of about four hectares, characterized by an original architecture of alleys embellished with numerous varieties of exotic species and enlivened by water games. The oriental profile of the pools and fountains is due to the taste of Edvige Mrozowska, who during his frequent trips had often visited the Orient and was enchanted by it.
As for the flora, you can admire tree conifers of different species, mostly ornamental: on the hill chestnut, birch and ash trees thrive; in the lower part of the park, on the other hand, there is a splendid beech of the "Asplenifolia" fern-leaf variety and rows of lime trees.
The forest also has a good wildlife, which lives undisturbed here: there are frequent sightings of red squirrels, the great spotted woodpecker and the green one; in a puddle of spring water is the spotted salamander. There are many buildings in the park: the greenhouses, the stable, the chapel, the bowling alley, the clay tennis court, the belvedere, the swimming pool and, of course, the Villa.
