The author brought up an interesting story. In a classroom full of students and there are two students are not on task. They are Jason and Katy. These two students are bothering other students, which they are not doing their work. The author explaining some details what’s in that classroom. There are “things” and what’s going on in there. The “things” are the stuffs that the teachers assigned for their students in class. At the end the teachers will question themselves “but did these things just keep our kids busy, or were our kids engaged in literature task that will make a difference in their literate lives?” As the author described the classroom environment and student’s daily assessment works, I noticed that the teachers are also implement their work for the next day. I believe that our teaching experience will grow and will become greater in our management. With that we still need some improvements. For example, time management and self-instruct. In order to be a good teacher, we have to do many practices and pace ourselves to understand the value of teaching. The table “Management: How We Have Evolved” tells me that there are “things” that involve with the teacher, students, groups, and their behaviors. The conversation between Margaret and the teachers make me realized that their statement are true and helpful. Margaret’s five tasks: read to yourself, read to someone, work on writing, listen to reading, and spelling/work study. These tasks seem helpful but a conference stated that for high achievement, a student should spend 90 minutes per day in literacy. I believe that keeping student busy every day, it will build up their strength in literacy to overcome challenges. While having students in busy, the teacher can also spare time with the other students to finish up their assignments. The Structure of Daily Five & CAFE table does seem to make sense for students and teacher because I strongly encourage myself that it will work for the teacher and students to achieve all work and assessing in literacy.

The Core Beliefs is that in a classroom full of students and a teacher, there has to be a belief in respect and trust. With many lessons to learned, teachers overcame the thoughtfulness of how to courage their students to engage in class were to teach them in writing and reading. Having students do some individual time work can excel their ability to learn. In order to do that, we have to trust our students that they are capable of doing it. Just as the example the author gave out about Maria and Isiah. When better in trust in our students, we will then focus our classroom community. I remember this when I was tutoring a grade 5 with a teacher. The students are doing their work, but there are always two or three students not on tasks. For me in order to trust them, I went up to the teacher to decide what to do with them. We are proudly set them to do individual work if they loved to. After their independent work, we would question them what they have read so far. We engaged back and forth to put and trust our student to be able to be on task like the other students. This came up with the choice if they willingly to work independently or with me or the teacher. Giving students the options to do assignment different ways can change the way how they learn and how we (teacher) see what they are capable of. With that in a classroom, we have to be able to seek the position to where in the classroom would this students felt more comfortable doing his/her job. The accountability we set in a classroom need to make sure that our students feel comfortable. Even in group, independently, or with the teacher. The 10 steps highly helps students achieve better in reading/writing in school. While looking at the 10 steps, I noticed that these steps are not just set up for students but as well for the teachers. I feel that in order to have a well engage classroom, the teacher has to involve the tasks that the students will be doing.

Reading chapter 1 and 2 made me realized that the connections between a teacher and the students involve in many works. Being a teacher isn’t easy and also for the students. Both have work to do. As for me being a student back in high school, I remember my science teacher set up the same foundation for us, students. I thought that only English teacher only set up these reading/ writing foundations to help us overcome our challenges in literacy. As I learned that even different subjects are highly recommend the need to set a goal for the students to be able to achieve high needs in literacy. Even though, it was just my science class, but we did many reading, writing, engage, and science activities.
