My engagement with online communities is very low level so this against is caveated by my title. I have stumbled across forums when trying to solve things using Google. To date I have read a few posts and then moved on. From this limited view I have uncovered negativity and a lack of personal accountability for whatever ails the individual. This does not feel like a community.

Whatever your passion there is an online forum/community you can join! I don’t belong to any but I see this as fantastic for young and old. My son is a complete petrol head and a savvy user of all things digital - he has learned and shared so much with likeminded folk without boring anyone who doesn’t share his interest 😀. My aunt is an avid knitter and the forums she belongs to provided much comfort and support to her when her husband died suddenly a few years ago. I have lots of other examples. What strikes me most is the reach - my son and my aunt correspond with people from all over the world about what unites them.

I have avoided social media due to it appearing to be a platform for sharing images of food/meals and trivia (perhaps I was unlucky). Gaining an understanding of its real use and value provided to individuals and communities has challenged my views. My engagement with social media groups is limited, though now see how forums for those with shared interests could create a sense of community over time. Having not engaged with social media for some time I am not sure I would consider any regular interaction as being part of a real community - though without the experience of regular participation it is difficult to determine.

Another thing to consider from last weeks reading is the availability of these communities and community bias - when not everyone can access or engage with content, is it a true reflection of a real community?
