This poem connects to transcendentalism through the tenets "seeking the truth" and "rejection of society". In the poem Whitman questions the seemingly useless years that he spent throughout his life. He questions the meaning of life and the reason for living with those useless years. He also shows the tenet "rejection of society" when he calls society "cities fill'd with the foolish". This shows the strong feelings that Whitman has towards those who, like him for all of those years, spend their time doing pretty much nothing.

The world in this modern age is an endless expanse of overwhelming oceanic movement, the tides of time are ever changing, the ripples of individuality are seemingly insignificant among the myriad of water droplets that make up this ocean. However, in the same way that a humble raindrop causes ripples throughout a pond, how a single bubble can change the entire shape of the ocean, or how a single fish can move up the food chain to eventually end up more important than it had ever known. I declare that I will use my water droplet of a life to make waves throughout the world. I declare that no drop is insignificant, and that even though the world is turbulent and ever-changing, I declare that I will never allow that to destroy my ambition to make waves. I declare that the ripples from one average raindrop can be seen for miles, and I declare that I will use this single raindrop to change the world, even just slightly, and to contribute to making the world a better place.
