The purpose of the wall was to keep people who were on the west side of Berlin that couldn't cross to the east side and also the other way around so east people couldn't cross to the west side. The wall acted as a physical barrier that symbolized political divisions between communism and democracy. The Germans believed in communism, controlling everybody and everything and everyone is the same. While the United States, Britain, and France believed in Democracy, voting for a leader and dictator. It stopped people and factory workers from fleeing so the economic growth didn't turn disastrous. People would try and flee just to see their family after they got split up. Before the wall was built it was pretty easy to cross and see family or go do something on different sides but once the wall went up it was almost impossible to flee to the other side. Construction on the Berlin Wall started on August 13th of 1961. When the Wall was first built it wasn't as secure and there weren't as many security weapons to make sure people didn't cross. It took them two weeks just to get the wall up with help from the army, police force, and volunteer construction workers just to get a makeshift wall up with barbed wire and concrete blocks. Germany was divided because it was part of the treaty they signed when they lost the war. Since Berlin was in the middle of the borders the countries split it up. The Eastern part went to the Soviet Union and the Western part went to the United States, Britain, and France. Before the Berlin wall, the Soviets tried to starve the Western side so all the people would die and they could take it back over. But the United States saw the blockade and came up with the Berlin Airlift which was planes flying over and dropping goods and food off to people so the Soviets couldn't do anything. After the blockade came off and that is when they came up with the Berlin Wall. freshly raked sand so they could see footprints if one was trying to escape.

The people put so much pressure on the government that political changes occurred. The Soviet Union loosened up on their restrictions and allowed people to cross. They didn't lift all of their restrictions but most of them were. Political, economic, and social had a huge impact on the Berlin Wall being torn down. Over 5,000 people managed to cross the border or wall. The escaped by jumping out of windows overlooking the wall, climbing over barbed wire, flying in hot air balloons, crawling through sewers and driving at the wall were it was weaker. At least 171 people died trying to flee by crossing the wall. Going into this topic I thought it was just a Wall that didn't allow people to go in and out of the country or border and I realized there was a lot more to it than just that with all the security measures and other things to kept people from crossing. I learned a lot about the Berlin Wall by how it operated and how they constructed it and guarded it, how people crossed it, why the Wall was put up to begin with. My learning of this topic was just more of and eye opener that putting the Wall up was a terrible thing because you wouldn't have been able to see family that lived on the other side for a while and what if they had died during the time the Wall was up. And how people didn't have all the freedom to cross the border to the other side. I enjoyed learning about this topic because it was super interesting and cool to see how the wall worked including the middle of the wall that had lots of weapons. When the wall was first built it consisted of barbed wire and concrete blocks.

In the middle of the wall their were more than one million land mines laying on the ground and 3,000 attack dogs so know one could escape.

The Berlin wall was 12 feet high and approximately 27 miles long with 302 guard towers.

The middle of the Wall was called "No Mans Land" or "Death Strip".

Hundreds of people died trying to escape or cross the wall.
