Habit change

After a few very challenging years, I have developed some unhealthy stress management techniques. I have come to rely upon sugar as a coping mechanism and stopped exercising as much as I should. The new habit I am going to focus on is improved body composition through increased exercise and improved nutrition. I will track my daily physical activity and fruit and vegetable consumption while rewarding myself with time set aside to focus on the things that bring me joy.

I was able to make some progress this week but there is definitely room for improvement. As a perfectionist, it is hard for me to accept that habit change is a process, and I am going to have to remember this when I slip up. I was able to meet my exercise goal of 5 training sessions this week, and I even attempted running which I haven't done in years. It feels good to be making gains in this area. However, I did struggle with the nutrition portion of my goal. While I did increase my fruit and vegetable consumption and my sugar intake was lower, it was no where near what I am hoping to achieve. I need to research better stress management techniques as stress is the number 1 thing standing in my way.

Once again, I was able to reach my weekly exercise goals but fell short with the nutrition aspect. It was a very stressful week, and this led to a lot of eating out and increased soda consumption. Maybe it is time to reassess my daily goals and consider smaller , more achievable steps. I think this would help me feel more confident in my ability to make these changes and to succeed. I also need to continue pursuing different coping techniques because nothing I have tried so far has really helped during intense times of stress.

This week I decided to change my approach with my nutrition goals. In the past I have focused on restricting sugar, and this just resulted in me craving it even more. I researched Intuitive Eating and practiced it this week. Intuitive Eating encourages you to listen to what your body is telling you and to trust that it knows what it needs. It will be a process, but I do feel that it is helping me develop a more healthy relationship with food. I have also found that by removing the restrictions, it has become easier to say no to treats or if I say yes, to eat much less of it. I hope that this will continue helping me progress towards my goals of improving my nutrition! I was also able to meet all of my exercise goals for the week and feel that I may be able to increase what I am doing in this area.

I didn't reach any of my goals this week, and I am extremely disappointed. 3 out of 5 family members have been sick (myself included) so this week was more focused on just getting by. I did sign up for my first 5K , and I have until Thanksgiving to train for it. I think this will help motivate me and keep me focused on reaching my overall goals.

I finally feel like I made some progress this week towards my goals! As I am learning about making the healthy choice the easy choice, I realized that this is something that I need to put into practice in my own life. It is always easier for me to meet my nutrition goals when I meal prep fruits and vegetables for the week, and this is something that I will start doing again. I am also going to continue eating intuitively as I feel that it has had a very positive impact on my relationship with food and has led to increased fruit consumption.

There's honestly not a lot to report on this week. I feel like my goal to increase my physical fitness is reaching the point where it could be considered a habit and seeing the progress I have made has been very motivating and rewarding. My food intake is still a work in progress, but I have started reaching for fruits and vegetables more and sweets less. Overall it was a good week.

I recently did an assignment that evaluated my motivation for staying physically active. When the results came back that motivation will be an issue for me, I was surprised. I really felt like I was working hard at changing my perspective and my approach to exercise and that staying motivated was going to be easy. Well, I was wrong. As my runs are getting more challenging and my family's needs are increasing, I am finding it harder and harder to want to exercise. It feels like a chore again, and I know that that needs to change. This week I am going to focus on problem solving my motivation and hopefully get back to enjoying it again!

This past week was really a struggle for me. There were a lot of stressful events plus a vacation so healthy eating and exercise were not a priority. I can tell a difference in how I feel physically, and I hope that this is the encouragement I need to get back on the right track. Being able to look back over the past 8 weeks really shows how much things vary and how life events affect our habits.
