Learning Log AVID by Andrew Mankowski

Next we will apply a reflection to think deeper about what we are learning. Choose 1 of the 3 options:

Focused Writing - Write non‐stop for two to five minutes on a specific topic that you are studying. The purpose of focused writing is for you to find out what you know about a topic, to explore new ideas, and to find out what you need to learn about a topic. To do this literally just start writing what you know about the topic without looking anything up.

Analyzing a New Idea - Answer the following questions in regards to a topic you are learning in class: What were the main ideas? What did you understand best? What questions do you still have about this information? How will you find more information? How does this idea relate to what you have already learned in class?

Creative Solutions - Take a real‐world problem that relates to something you are studying (e.g., air pollution, environment, etc) and come up with a creative solution for this problem. Allow your solution to be outlandish and unrealistic. Real solutions have often arisen from activities similar to this one.

Post your reflection below in this Padlet. Make sure you include your name and to put your reflection in the correct column. After you have shared your reflection read your classmates learning log reflections and give them positive comments.

Cells and DNA are interesting and have opened my mind to possibilities. All life is an organism, I get that, all organisms have a plan passed on from a previous generation. The methods and randomness of those things passed on seems a bit arbitrary and we seem to think we can understand and apply rules to reproduction of those characteristics and traits we want to see more of. This may be suitable, and helpful in plants like corn and edibles that keep our species alive. But should we be tampering with the DNA of animals and humans? Perhaps we can examine the traits that create illness and chronic conditions and fix those. Removing and reducing recessive bad genes before they become dominant genes may be in our future. Is it too late? I wonder

The main idea for the Language Arts is poetry and all of the techniques/strategies that you can use to make your poem more engaging and interesting. I think I understood similes and metaphors the best, it’s simple but it’s something that can make your poem more interesting and have a deeper meaning. We are still learning about poetry so I will continue to research and take notes from the class so I can learn more about the topic and what else I can do to make a better poem. In Language Arts we usually learn about different styles of writing and different kinds of stories, poetry is just another type of writing so it is like a lot of the other topics we’ve already learned about.

Ever wondered if vertical bowling exists? Well I have made vertical bowling exist, by making it go down a ramp and don a cardboard box and use basketballs and a small soccer ball. it will knock down bowling pins (in this case prime hydration bottles and gatorade bottles) and i was supposed to spend no money on it and i never did. And it would always hook west which made move the box ramp to the east so then the balls would hit the pins.

In science we are learning about climate change. I didn’t know too much about this topic to begin with, just that it has to do with how and why things change. As the climate changes animals and plants might have a harder time surviving. For example, if an animal has adaptations to live in a colder climate, if that climate starts to warm up, that animal might struggle to survive in its new environment. If that happens, the ecosystem will be unbalanced. I know that humans have dramatically increased the carbon dioxide levels on earth. They have done this by using factories, farm equipment and cars with the exhaust, and deforestation. If the carbon dioxide levels rise too much it might cause global warming. I don’t really know too much about global warming. Deforestation is terrible because it can cause erosion, less homes and food for animals, and the trees help with the carbon dioxide in the air. Climate change is also causing the ocean levels to rise which could cause flooding. I was also interested in learning how to help the earth by planting trees if we cut them down and try to conserve natural resources.

Matthew

In class, we talked about Jason Reynolds and his book "The Ingredients." The main ideas center around how food connects people and how every ingredient in a dish has its own story. I really loved how he mixes cooking with personal experiences, showing that food is more than just something to eat—it’s about family and culture too.

What I understood best is how Reynolds uses storytelling to make each recipe feel special. It’s like getting to know the person behind the food, which makes me appreciate cooking more.

I still have questions about how he chooses the ingredients for his recipes. Does he have a favorite dish he loves to make? I might ask my teacher or check out some interviews with Reynolds to learn more.

This connects to what we've learned about community and identity in class. Food is such a big part of who we are, and Reynolds really highlights that in a fun and meaningful way!

In Social Studies I have been learning about slavery and the Underground Railroad. How enslaved people traveled unnoticed with the help of abolitionists. They traveled night after night and hid in people’s homes during the day so they didn’t get caught. One famous former slave, Harriet Tubman, made her way to the northern states but stayed on the border to help more enslaved people make their way to freedom. She traveled over 10 times back to the southern states and helped over 70 people to the free, northern states.

So, there's this book by Sandra Cisneros called "The Neighborhood," and it’s really cool because it talks about growing up in a neighborhood and all the different people you meet. Sandra writes in this super poetic way that makes everything feel really real like you can actually see and feel the things she describes.

I love how she captures the vibe of a neighborhood, especially how everyone knows each other and the little stories that make each place special. It’s not just about the houses or streets but the emotions and memories tied to them. It reminds me of my own neighborhood, where you see the same faces every day and how those connections shape who you are.

There’s also this sense of belonging she talks about, which is really important. Like, even when things get tough or weird in life, your neighborhood can feel like a safe space. She examines the challenges that come with it too, especially for kids and families, which makes it relatable.

And I think it’s cool how she portrays strong female characters, like the women in the story who have their own dreams and struggles. They are inspiring because they show that even in tough situations, you can be brave and follow your heart.

Overall, reading this book makes me want to appreciate my own neighborhood more and think about all the little things that make it mine. Plus, it's also a reminder of how stories are everywhere, just waiting to be told!

Teamwork

Teamwork is when a bunch of people work together to get something done. It’s like in group projects at school. Everyone has their own part, and if everyone does their part right, the whole project turns out better and it’s usually easier. Sometimes, one person might be the leader and help everyone stay on track. Good teamwork means everyone listens to each other’s ideas, even if they don’t totally agree at first. It also means helping each other out if someone is stuck or needs help finishing their part. When teamwork works well, it can make even hard stuff get done faster and better than if everyone tried to do it all by themselves. Plus, it can be more fun when you’re working with friends. But if people don’t listen or don’t do their share, then teamwork can be a big mess and make everything harder.
