The Philippine archipelago consists of about 7,600 islands within its geographical boundaries. Its complex geological history, climate (tropical and subtropical), land elevation (up to ca. 2900 masl), and various terrestrial substrates are the main driving forces which contribute to its high species diversity. It is both a megadiverse country and biodiversity hotspot. Hence, Philippine biodiversity is an integral part of our global heritage and is important for the conservation of life.

The Sibuyan Island ecoregion (Romblon Province) is recognized as an extreme priority conservation area for terrestrial and marine organisms. The island occupies an area of approx. 45,600 hectares and is located at the center of the Philippine archipelago. It is dubbed by scientists as the "Galapagos of Asia" because of its isolation and large endemicity. One of the prominent landscapes in this ecoregion is Mt. Guiting-Guiting, which is an IUCN Category II Protected Area. This coastal mountain (photo shown) has an altitude of ca. 2050 m and consists of entirely ultramafic rocks.
