Thalassemia is a inherited blood disorder that makes the body form an unusual amount of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the protein in red blood and it carries oxygen. If you have Beta Thalassemia major then you will have more severe symptoms and you will probably need blood transfusions every four to six weeks because red blood cells only live for around three months.

Medications for the disorder are only available if you have a less severe case of Thalassemia the medications are called Ferriprox and Deferasirox. If you have a more severe case of Thalassemia then you will need blood transfusions. Recently gene therapy for Thalassemia which isn't used often had to clinical trials and it has shown significant improvement in the patients outcome.
