Tiberius 14-37 CE

Tiberius succeeded his stepfather Augustus, a theme that is quite common. He was an overall good emperor, while he was not liked by the senate the people (especially the roman military) loved him. He was most notably an incredibly good general. He conquered the enemies and recovered many lost roman legions. At the end of his reign the national treasury was 20 times wealthier. However at the end of his reign he became a recluse and exercised more tyrannical powers.

Caligula came into power because he was Tiberius' adopted son. After gaining power he grew very ill. Once he recovered he became tyrannical and cruel. He brought back treason trials and rampaged around the land killing people just because he felt like it, once of which was his nephew. He also consistantly claimed to be divine or close to divinity. The tyranny continued until conspiracies were formed and he was murdered in January 41 CE.

Claudius came into power after Caligula was killed by emphasizing his friendship with the military and paying off the senate. He was also Caligula's uncle. Claudius was a pretty good emperor, he not only expanded the Roman Empire but more importantly brought peace with the use of law. In addition he executed Caligula's assassins. Claudius died October 13th 54 CE, whether he was assassinated with poison or died from natural causes is a question that was never solved.

Nero was one of Rome's worst emperors, he was both a criminal and a tyrant. He became heir after Claudius adopted him as a son. He is accused of killing his stepbrother, mom, and wife. He also is accused of instigating the great fire of Rome, and persecuting christians. He is also accused of murdering many other roman citizens as well as countless sexual crimes. He did not do much of anything to progress Rome, only bringing terror and tyranny. After the senate declared him a public enemy, Nero fled and committed suicide.

Vespasian contrived to have the two Egyptian legions declare him emperor. Unlike many before he was a well liked emperor. He created the Flavian Dynasty and worked to rebuild the law and order in Rome. Unlike other emperors before him, Vespasian was from a humble descent. He was a cool tempered emperor who was not cruel like others. He also wasn't big on executing his enemies, and had no bad will against those that did not pose a big threat. He tried to make the people have faith in the economy again and introduced new taxes on Rome's provinces. He also granted citizenship to places that had been held in the empire for long periods of time.

He is best known for following up in Nero and Vespasian's actions and conquering Jerusalem. He also saw through the completing the construction of the Colosseum. Although he had a short term, due to his untimely demise at age 41, the common people generally liked Titus.

Younger brother of Titus and son of Vespasian, Domitian gained power from Titus after his death. Unlike his brother and father, Domitian was a horrible emperor. He was described as quick to anger, strict, bold, and suspicious. After becoming emperor he took full control of power and abused the system in many ways such as making himself consol 10 times. He even publically overruled senate membership and voting. Although all this, the empire somewhat benefited from his rule. He helped out the economy, having high but fair taxes and left a high amount of wealth in the treasury. He had multiple successful military campaigns, and had a few big construction projects.

Trajan was adopted by Nerva and succeeded power from him. Trajan was perhaps Rome's best emperor. He was modest but smart and firm. He sought to better the lives of the common citizens, he increased social welfare and vastly expanded Rome's borders. Under Trajan's rule Rome was the largest it would get. He took on big building programs and created Trajan's Column, a work of art that he is still remembered for. Trajan's rule was the beginning of the Pax Romana, which is the period of time when Rome was peaceful and the most successful. He seemed do genuinely care for the people, which is why it is tragic that he fell ill and died of a stroke.

Hadrian 117-138 CE

Hadrian was a first cousin of Trajan, this is how he was able to become emperor. Hadrian was a great emperor but for a different reason than those before him. Instead of chasing war and expanding the empire, Hadrian focused on building up strength and borders in the land they already had. This is the reasoning behind Hadrian's Wall. This wall went coast to coast stretching a whopping 73 miles. It was wisdom like this that gained Hadrian support. He was well liked by all of the people and it was a peaceful time for Rome. A fun fact about Hadrian is that he was one of the only Roman Emperors to wear a beard, it is said he did this to hide his bad skin complexion. Sadly his beard was not able to prevent congestive heart failure, which is how he died in 138 CE.

Marcus was the first Roman Emperor who served with another person. He served as joint emperors with Lucius Verus, however Marcus seemed to be more involved and had most of the responsibility. While there were no big accomplishments under his lead he is remembered for 2 things. One being that he was the last emperor in the Pax Romana, after his death the country went into civil war. The second is that Marcus Aurelius practiced stoicism and wrote the book "The Meditations". This book is basically the moral tenets of Stoicism. It is not known if he meant for other people to read the novel. Marcus wanted to change back from defensive to offensive and expand the empire again. However just as it looked like he might be making progress he died from what is guessed to be a plague brought to Rome from Syria, because of this his son Commodus was named emperor.

Diocletian was both a bad and good emperor. He was able to bring a relatively stable, secure, and efficient government for the first time in a long while. However Diocletian believed that the country of Rome was too large for one person to rule, he decided to split it into East Rome, and West Rome. He introduced a system of government called tetrarchy that uses four rulers, two augusti and two caesars. After many illnesses he retired and died of natural causes.

While Diocletian physically divided the country, Constantine religiously divided the country. After becoming the ruler of Western Rome he built the city Constantinople, which would become the most powerful city in the world. He also passed laws that made it legal to practice Christianity. Him spreading his christian values and legalizing christianity is what divided Rome. The area he ruled would then become the Byzantine Empire. He enacted all different types of reforms that strengthened his empire. He is thought of as Great by the people of his empire. Constantine forever changed the culture of Rome and Christianity. He was also the first Roman Emperor to become a Christian. He eventually died in 337 CE from an unknown illness while he was campaigning against the Persians.
