I use art to reflect my interests.  It expands my understanding and helps me question what many take for granted.  Giving weight to my voice and my opinions are very important to me and I feel Fine Art helps me to do that. The exploration of art and the growth of my understanding are very important to me as a creative individual.  

I try to be open and be understanding to all types of art.

One of the most inspiring exhibitions I have visited in recent years was the Turner prize at the Tate Britain. I particularly liked the political and the comedic side of some of the pieces which sometimes could be controversial such as Anthea Hamilton's piece.

One of my favourite artists is the sculptor Colin Christian.  His uncomfortably gruesome anime style of working has taught me that art does not have to be pretty and perfect, strange is interesting. His work definitely triggers something in me to think in broader concepts and not to just stay with traditional methods.  

For my current project on my UAL level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design I have used his idea of ‘strange is interesting’ to explore fungal growth and decay which subsequently developed into miniature apocalyptic dioramas which are far from aesthetically pleasing.

In the past year I was commissioned by the Royal Lancaster Hotel London to create artwork that was directly inspired by the hotel and its values.  Focusing on the Thai influence from the hotels owner I chose to paint a Thai elephant, especially considering they are an endangered species. I thickly applied and layered acyclic paint to give the elephant substance.  Working with the form of the paint I wanted to convey a sense of ‘life’, as though the animal was emerging from the flat 2D surface of the canvas and that you could feel the texture of its ears, trunk and tusks. This was very successful experience for me and it will be displayed in the hotel. 

 

In December 2016 my level 3 Art and Design course organised an Exhibition outside of college. I have gained new skills from this experience such as creating an exhibition and curating.

I from visiting the private Pablo Picasso exhibition talk in the National portrait gallery with the curator Elizabeth Cowling I learned a lot about curating an exhibition.

 

Outside college, I enjoy photography and I especially love Nature photography, just being able to go out and explore my surrounding opens up countless thoughts and inspiration that wouldn't come to me sitting behind a desk. 

I like the immediacy of digital photography especially on a iPhone but I also use a DSLR which is less immediate, I enjoy having to be involved more with the process of the capturing.

Many of my photos can be seen on my Instagram (misschloehillart), however I would like to develop other mediums and I feel this course Fine Art will help me expand new skills. 

   

In 2013 as part of my Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award I volunteered at a local brownie group, which helped me appreciate the individual's characters life brings and how important active listening is although it can be hard at times. I have a part time job at a cake shop as a cake decorator. I design and create edible fondant figures, animals and flowers to go on tops of birthday, wedding, christening and many other types of cakes. I also create scene cakes such garden, allotment, gym and bedrooms. I am truly excited to go to work because there is always something new and crazy to create.  I sometimes have freedom to create items from my own imagination which always makes it more exciting also most the time I have to work to strict deadlines, this has helped me to work well under pressure and under commission.

With what little free time I have remaining I enjoy watching films. I'm a huge film fanatic that loves any genre however Sci-fi, fantasy and 80s cinema interests me the most.

As well as my enthusiasm and dedication to my work, I know I will be very successful in a fine art course at University, as this will help me to achieve my goals and will open up various paths for me such as my desire to eventually work in art education,

2.What do you dislike about the art world?

People outside of the art world thinks the artists are lazy and doesn’t really understands the work.

3.What is your dream project?

To make my own model town and hundreds of mini disasters happening all in once.

4.What makes you angry?

A lot of things for example people being unfair to other people, equality is very important.

5.What’s your strongest memory of your childhood?

Going to odds farm, going on the slides and the maze made out hay.

6.What are your most successful pieces of work?

End of the world scenes, dioramas held in vinyl factory.

8.Name something you don’t love, and why.

I don’t like peanuts, smell of them makes me sick.

9.What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Not to worry about going outside the box, not everything has to be perfect and pretty.

10.What superpower would you have and why?

I would definitely have a superpower of flying to see different animals and different cultures and see what they are like and live in that moment to discover new cultures.
