ADHESION

Definition- When one type of substance sticks to another. Easy to remember when thinking adhesive tape (tape sticks to different surfaces) and it attracts to different surfaces. (A and A can help you remember).
Use In The Real World- When you have to wipe up your floor with the paper towel, why does the water get soaked up by it? This is because of adhesion. The water molecules are sticking, or adhering to the paper towel. This allows you to have easy cleanup after a spill.
Human/ Global Impact of Adhesion- When it rains, water a lot of the time will "bead up" on plants. This means droplets will stay on the plants after the rainfall. This allows the plant to get steady water even after the rainfall has finished as the different droplets will fall gradually from the plant leaves. Then, this impacts the entire ecosystem as animals are allowed to eat the plants and animals eat other animals, and so on. All because of adhesion.
Relation to Chemistry- Adhesion has two different effects in chemistry. It affects the meniscus and sometimes makes it so we don't have very accurate answers. The meniscus is the curve that we see at the top of liquid sometimes. This is because the water would rather adhere to the side of the container rather than cohere to the other water molecules. A quick note is that you always measure from the bottom of the meniscus in order to get accurate results since that is where the actual water is. Secondly, adhesion can give us bad lab results because water or other substances can adhere to the sides of beakers or test tubes and that results in not all of the substance getting out and into the experiment.
Related to the Water Cycle- Rain falls from the sky. It then gets stuck on leaves, branches and grass on it's way down. This can then lead to runoff but more likely evaporation or infiltration into the ground. As shown, there are many connections between the water cycle and adhesion.

SURFACE TENSION

Definition- Surface tension is basically a "film" that lays on top of a body of water which makes it more difficult for objects to move through than it would be if the object was completely submerged.
Use In The Real World- Insects such as the Water Strider use the surface tension to walk on the surface of the water without sinking.
Human/Global Impact- Surface tension helps a lot with the ecosystem because without it even the smallest particles/objects would sink underwater and the large objects/particles would sink also, killing marine life, and collapsing the ecosystem.
Relation to Chemistry- Surface tension is related to chemistry because it contains molecules, temperature, mass, etc. For example surface tension has exterior molecules and interior molecules and depending on the molecules maintaining a minimum surface area, the lower the energy will be for the molecules.
Related to the Water Cycle- Surface tension is related to the water cycle because the polar nature/empty spaces of water help the rise of high surface tension, which then helps water to rise in capillary structures such as stems and roots of plants and trees to help then grow. This then allows surface runoff and transpiration to occur.
