In this first scene, Ferdinand and Miranda become romantically involved, their unionship is crucial to Prospero’s plan of having something to wager with Alonso (King of Naples) as well as the foundation to making sure his daughter will be taken care of. With this marriage Prospero would be able to convince Alonso that the marriage would be to his advantage. Ariel, whom was eavesdropping, then reveals the plan to Propsero and continues to follow the men. This scene serves as the addition of friction to Prospero's plans that he had so diligently been working on. The audience is now presented with an opposing side, which makes us wonder whether or not this plan is going to go in favor of Prospero. Throughout the Act (I wanted to include scene 3 as well but I didn't want to overstep my boundaries since I had already done two short scenes as opposed to one.) we're presented with multiple elements of secrecy, all producing much needed insight on the characters and information towards the overall plot. In scene 1 we, as the audience, begin to notice how much Prospero sneaks around and meddles within the realms of his daughters life. We know that he's determined to get revenge on his conspirators but it's interesting seeing how he maneuvers thru his daughter's world and how he manipulates in a way that will benefit both he and Miranda. Despite his dire need to have power I'm led to believe that he's more family oriented and thoughtful (while bitter) than he is maniacal and tyrant like. In Scene 2 Ariel is the one displaying power, aside from his magical talents he has to ability to sit in on conversations and gain intel in order to pass on information. Throughout this scene we're presented with men all willing to conspire together in order to gain some sort of power over someone else. Caliban is interested in getting back the island (as he believes he is justly entitled to), Stephano is interested in having Miranda and Trinculo imagines himself as a governor. All positions that hold power over people or possessions that attract people. In scene 3, once again is Ariel utilizing his abilities to remind the men of their crimes against Prospero (while he invisibly watches). When Sebastian becomes too distracted with his plot to kill Alonso the men must be confronted and reminded of the severity of their crimes and punished for their actions against Prospero and Miranda. In this instance Ariel has the power of nature on his side as well as the power that accompanies handling justice and balance.
