10 Positive Ways to Manage Stress

The following strategies can be combined and adapted based on individual preferences to create a personalized approach to stress management.

Gratitude Journaling. Maintaining a gratitude diary promotes a positive outlook, reduces stress, and helps one focus on the good things in life. Mindful Breathing. By using deep, conscious breathing exercises, one can trigger the body's relaxation response, which lowers stress and fosters calmness. Physical Activity. Frequent exercise helps reduce stress and releases opiates, which are the brain's instinctual state-of-mind enhancers. Exercises that improve the mind and body include yoga and nature walks. Sleeping well. Proper sleep is important for stress management because exhausted people cannot solve problems effectively. Be Optimistic. Fortunately, teens can develop optimism by learning to focus on positive events rather than negative ones. Teens can try to build positivity instead of focusing on what went wrong in their day. Laughter Therapy. Recovering from anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions may depend on laughter therapy. It also helps with physical illnesses. There are several forms of laughter therapy, and in just a few sessions, patients can start to feel better. Volunteering. Helping others through volunteering fosters a sense of purpose, community, and accomplishment, positively impacting mental well-being and reducing stress. Social Connections. Having a support system, expressing circumstances, and connecting with friends and family can all help to lessen feelings of loneliness and offer emotional support. Nature Therapy. Spend time in natural environments, engaging in activities like hiking or simply enjoying green spaces. Artistic Expression. Engage in unconventional artistic activities like fluid art, mandala drawing, or kinetic sand sculpting.

In my experience, my stressor was academic stress. I was overwhelmed and stressed due to the many assignments I had due. With all these assignments I had due, they were in many different subjects and needed great effort. On top of having many actual assignments, I also had a lot of studying to conduct for upcoming exams. Juggling all of these assignments, subjects, and studies was really difficult and caused me great strain. I had the urge to just give up because I ended up feeling so doubtful of finishing.

Five emotions this scenario made me feel:

Overwhelmed

Pressured

Depression

Tired

Unmotivated

While it's crucial to acknowledge stress management methods, it's important to highlight that some strategies can be counterproductive or unhealthy. Some common examples of this are:

Smoking

Drinking alcohol

Overeating

Lack of exercise

Wreckless Driving

Some other examples include:

Shopping compulsively - using retail therapy as a stress reliever puts a strain on finances.

Excessive Screen Time - too much screen time can increase stress levels. Screen time should be limited to no more than an hour.

Taking it out on others - Although snapping at people can help release some tension, it is bad for relationships. It's crucial to relax and take a deep breath before responding in an upsetting way when managing stress.

Excessive sleeping - While you sleep, you get a brief escape from reality, but when you wake up, the issue still exists. Furthermore, taking extended naps can disrupt your nighttime sleep, and getting too much sleep overall can make it difficult to focus on important tasks like school or work.

Nail biting. Nail biting can lead to health issues and diseases because your nails carry lots of germs and bacteria.

The positive stress management strategy I chose to implement is nature therapy. I spend time in a natural setting, observe the surroundings, and reflect on how it makes me feel. I Note any changes in my mood, stress levels, or overall well-being. The results I've experienced from this were a clearer sense of mind and control. I've also noticed that it helps me appreciate my surroundings more and look on the brighter side of things. I'm pleased with the positive outcome of this strategy and I found that it even led to me developing a more optimistic mindset.
