         <title>1940s - 1960</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Religiosity can rise and fall just like other things do over time. In fact, America of the 1940s was about as as religious as America today.<br><br>The 1950s were also a time when America began to see itself as a Christian nation in a cold war with atheistic communism. <a href="http://spectator.org/articles/38107/eisenhowers-religion">President Eisenhowe</a>r joined a church after being elected, becoming the first president to be baptized while in office. In 1954, the phrase “under God” was added to the pledge of allegiance to signify the religious stance of the country.<br><br>Religiosity in the United States is in the midst of what might be called ‘The Great Decline.’ Previous declines in religion pale in comparison. Over the past fifteen years, the drop in religiosity has been twice as great as the decline of the 1960s and 1970s. Overall, the hundreds of survey measures point to the same drop in religion: If the 1950s were another Great Awakening, this is the Great Decline.<br><br>The future of this revival turned out to be short. The rise in religiosity halted by the beginning of the 1960s. By the end of the decade, religiosity began to wane. The societal changes of the 1960s, which included a questioning of religious institutions. The resulting decline in religion stopped by the end of the 1970s, when religiosity remained steady</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>70's - The Vietnam War was still a major event in the early 1970s. Tragic events dominated the era, including the deadliest earthquake of the century, the <a href="https://www.thoughtco.com/the-jonestown-massacre-1779385">Jonestown massacre</a>, the <a href="https://www.thoughtco.com/munich-massacre-1779628">Munich Olympics massacre</a>, the taking of American hostages in Iran and the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island.<br><br>80's - <br>Soviet Premier <a href="https://www.thoughtco.com/mikhail-gorbachev-1779895">Mikhail Gorbachev</a>'s policies of glasnost and perestroika began the <a href="https://www.thoughtco.com/cold-war-timeline-1221188">end of the Cold War</a>. This was soon followed by the surprising <a href="https://www.thoughtco.com/the-berlin-wall-28-year-history-1779495">fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989</a>.</div><div>There were also some disasters this decade, including the <a href="https://www.thoughtco.com/mt-st-helens-1779771">eruption of Mount St. Helens</a>, the oil spill of the Exxon Valdez, the Ethiopian famine, a huge poison gas leak in Bhopal and the discovery of AIDS.<br><br>90's - </div>]]></description>
