Using humour and not taking yourself too seriously is key, but drifting over into too much reality can ruin the whole idea, like Tina Fey parodying Sarah Palin but then having Palin herself appear next to the character. Facts like, if you kill all of them for their tusks there won't be any left, they'll go extinct, they need their tusks to live and humans just want them for physical possessions.
