I believe that teachers can model SEL practices in the classroom by participating in SEL strategies/activities themselves. I attached a link to professional development activities that can be done with other staff! To respond to your second question, I think teachers should begin by getting to know their students. This would allow them to target certain competencies either by order, or focus more on one than another.

I think the way that teachers can model SEL practices in the classroom is by being knowledgable about the different SEL practices there are. To know this, teachers must first understand the different SEL competencies to best pick which strategy to use for each occasion. For example, in practicing self-awareness, the teacher could use the strategy of journaling how they are feeling in order to gain insight on their feelings and understanding on what causes them to feel this way. Having this approach with SEL can help students in many ways by providing them a model on how to regulate themselves in all aspects of SEL. By using and modeling strategies for each SEL competency, the teacher is able to help students understand ways in which to support themselves socially and emotionally.

I think using visuals such as videos and read aloud can be a great way for teachers to model SEL practices by having students interact with the text or video. Then teacher and students can think of ways of model behavior related to the problem or issue from the book or video.
